The Birmingham Water Works (BWW) General Manager, Michael Johnson, recently announced that a boil mandate remains active in several areas of Birmingham. These locales include Forestdale, Pratt City, Adamsville, Fultondale, Dugan Highway, Walker Chapel Road, and the surrounding regions. Reason being, a broken valve was discovered during the leak repair process, causing concerns over possible water contamination. A completion of the water restoration process is nearing, with the hope to lift the alert soon.
“As we recharge the system, we’re continuing to test based on regulations so that we can see what those results are. And we’ll continue to test until we get to the point where we can release that data, or at least lift that forward. I’m hoping that we can do that within the next 24 to 36 hours.” Johnson states.
BWW is now collaborating with Walmart and numerous fire stations to provide fresh drinking water for the affected areas. The water distribution sites include:
The sites will be open till 7PM. If the boil mandate is extended further, these sites will reopen at 8AM the following day.
To ensure safety during this mandate, it is recommended that water be boiled for at least three minutes and allowed to cool before using. Residents are advised against using ice from an ice tray and using disposable cups, plates, and utensils, to guarantee safety.
During these uncertain times, it is essential to practice safety and precautionary measures to protect oneself and the community. Share how you are staying safe during this water mandate by tagging us on Instagram at @bhamnow.
