Birmingham Community Reeling After Violent Crime Spree
Birmingham, Alabama, has been shaken by a series of violent incidents linked to a man whose criminal history dates back to his teenage years. The individual, Damien McDaniel, is currently facing multiple charges after a recent crime spree that resulted in six deaths and left 19 others wounded.
Court Records Reveal Troubling Past
McDaniel’s first publicly recorded criminal charge surfaced in 2019 when he was just 17 years old. He was charged with two counts of attempted murder for reportedly shooting into a vehicle occupied by two individuals. This charge marked the beginning of a troubling path that would soon escalate.
In January 2020, following a preliminary hearing related to these attempted murder charges, McDaniel was apprehended by Birmingham Police while in possession of two firearms. Court documents indicate that McDaniel acknowledged ownership of the guns, one of which was reported as stolen from Cleburne County. A subsequent motion to revoke his bond indicated that he had a juvenile record which included charges related to firearm possession.
Struggles with Monitoring and Accountability
Despite the serious nature of his charges, McDaniel was released on bond in September 2020 with conditions that included wearing a GPS tracking device and remaining under home confinement. However, three months later, prosecutors reported that McDaniel had violated this condition when his aunt allegedly removed the GPS device, which she discarded in frustration. This led to the revocation of his bond.
McDaniel’s legal troubles continued as he was arrested in March 2021 on another attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting incident on 41st Street in Birmingham. Although evidence was initially presented to dismiss the charges, a victim later identified McDaniel as the shooter, prompting the case to be moved to the Grand Jury, although it was ultimately dropped.
Escalating Violence and Recent Charges
In April 2023, McDaniel pleaded guilty to the initial attempted murder charges and received a sentence of 15 years, with two years to be served in prison and three years on probation.
However, his release was short-lived. By October 2024, prosecutors filed another motion to revoke his bond, citing instances where McDaniel allegedly displayed firearms on social media multiple times within a seven-month period. Just days later, Birmingham Police apprehended him on new firearm and drug charges.
A Series of Homicides
The most alarming developments unfolded in September 2024 when McDaniel was linked to a string of homicides. Authorities allege he killed Diontranet Brown, 35 years old, in a targeted shooting, although Brown was not the intended victim. Just two days later, in a separate incident outside a club in Five Points South, McDaniel is accused of murdering four individuals and injuring 17 others in what police are considering potentially a murder-for-hire case.
The investigations concluded with a shocking revelation that less than 24 hours later, McDaniel allegedly committed another killing, this time of Jamarcus McIntyre, alongside shootings of additional victims.

Today, McDaniel faces a staggering number of charges, including capital murder, intentional murder, attempted murder, first-degree assault, and various firearm and drug offenses. The Birmingham community is left grappling with the consequences of the violence, and many are left wondering what could have been done differently to prevent this tragic turn of events.
