BIRMINGHAM, AL – The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has proudly announced a significant achievement in the realm of organ transplantation. The esteemed medical institution recently completed its 3,000th adult liver transplant, cementing its status as a major center for liver transplantation not just in Alabama, but also nationally.
Dr. Robert Cannon, an associate professor and surgical director of the liver transplant program, emphasized that this milestone could not have been reached without the commitment of many individuals at UAB over the years, as well as the generosity of countless donors and families. “This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of countless individuals at UAB over four decades, thousands of donors and families who have given selflessly that others may live, and the bravery of patients facing their time of greatest need,” said Dr. Cannon.
The journey of liver transplantation at UAB dates back to 1968 when the program completed its very first organ transplant. Since then, the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute has been at the forefront of vital research, innovative techniques, and the development of new medicines. Patients from across the United States—specifically from 44 states—have chosen UAB for their organ transplant needs, marking its influence on a national scale.
Brendan McGuire, the medical director of liver transplantation remarked, “We are able to achieve this milestone because of the incredible team of health care professionals at UAB and the generosity of the donor families who time and time again give the gift of life.” This achievement reflects a collaborative effort among many specialized teams, including hepatologists, surgeons, and transplant-trained nursing staff.
Over the last fifty years, UAB has performed more than 16,000 organ transplants, including a variety of procedures such as heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, and uterus transplants, offering renewed hope to both adult and pediatric patients. UAB’s liver transplant program, being the only one in Alabama, consistently demonstrates exceptional outcomes, often ranked among the best in the United States. The institution continues to innovate and tackle barriers in transplantation.
It’s important to recognize that the success of such transplant programs largely relies on the selfless contributions of organ donors. The Legacy of Hope, Alabama’s organ procurement center, plays a critical role in facilitating these life-saving transplants. Executive Director Christy Keahey expressed pride in partnering with UAB to celebrate the recent milestone. “Transplantation would not be possible without the generosity of donors and their families who think outside of themselves to help others,” said Keahey. “We are honored to be part of this lifesaving mission.”
This milestone not only signifies a remarkable achievement for UAB but also highlights the vital collaboration among medical professionals and the community. As they look to the future, UAB’s Comprehensive Transplant Institute aims to continue leading advancements in transplantation, ultimately saving more lives.
This celebratory landmark serves as a reminder of the importance of organ donation and the immense impact it has on the lives of those in need of transplants. With each transplant, UAB offers hope for a healthier future to many families across Alabama and beyond.
