Birmingham Community Mourning After 18-Year-Old Shot and Killed Near Family Home

Birmingham Community Shaken by Recent Tragedy

BIRMINGHAM – A community is grieving after the tragic loss of 18-year-old Ja’Quavius James “Quay” Weston, who was shot and killed outside his family’s home on the night of May 15, 2024. The Birmingham Police Department confirmed that local resident Cameron Jayveon Scales, also 18 and from Bessemer, has been charged with murder in connection to Weston’s death.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred late Wednesday night in the Ensley Highlands neighborhood. Police responded to two alerts from Shot Spotter technology, which detected gunfire in the area. The first alert registered 12 rounds fired, while the second indicated an additional six rounds shortly after. Officers arrived on the scene around 11:23 p.m., but initial witnesses claimed they saw and heard nothing unusual when they returned home.

According to Sergeant LaQuitta Wade, police were initially unable to find any evidence of gunfire damage. After canvassing the area without any signs of casualties, officers returned to their precinct. However, a call was placed back to police just before midnight, prompting officers to return to the scene.

Discovery of the Victim

Upon their return at approximately 11:53 p.m., police were informed by family members that they had discovered Weston unresponsive about 15 feet into a wooded area near their home. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and pronounced him dead at 12:07 a.m., as confirmed by the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Investigation Progress

Investigators reported that a family member had overheard Weston arguing on the phone with someone shortly before the shooting occurred. Following the argument, shots could be heard. However, as of now, a clear motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.

Cameron Jayveon Scales was arrested the following Wednesday during a police operation in the 1000 block of Huckleberry Lane in Hoover. Authorities from the Birmingham Police Department’s Special Enforcement Division, along with Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies, apprehended him and he was booked into the Jefferson County Jail later that afternoon. He remains in custody without bond.

Community Reaction

The events of that night have left a somber mood in the community, with residents expressing shock and concern over violence in their neighborhood. “It’s just heartbreaking to see such a young life cut short,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We need to come together and address these issues.”

Local leaders have been calling for community forums to discuss safety measures and support systems for families affected by gun violence. The Birmingham community has witnessed similar incidents before, raising concerns about youth safety and the impact of violence on neighborhoods.

What’s Next

The investigation into the shooting continues as police gather more information and interview witnesses. Scales has yet to enter a plea, and his initial court appearance will further outline the legal proceedings to come.

As Birmingham residents mourn the loss of Weston, community members are banding together to reach out to those affected by this tragedy. Various local organizations are also discussing potential support initiatives to help address youth violence and provide resources to families in need.

The Birmingham Police Department urges anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist in their investigation. The community hopes to find answers and accountability while advocating for peace and safety.

As this story continues to develop, we will keep residents informed about the latest updates and the community’s ongoing efforts to heal and unite.
