Birmingham Bids Farewell to Tourism Leader J. John Oros Jr. After Nine Transformative Years

Farewell to Birmingham’s Tourism Trailblazer

Birmingham is saying goodbye to a significant figure in its tourism landscape as J. John Oros Jr., the CEO of the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau, prepares to step down after an inspiring nine-year tenure. Since taking charge in 2015, Oros, with over 20 years of experience in hospitality, has been instrumental in boosting the city’s economy and enhancing its reputation as a prime travel destination.

A Major Economic Impact

Thanks to Oros’ leadership, Birmingham’s economic impact has surged to an impressive $2.52 billion. This staggering figure is a testament to his commitment to fostering growth in the region through tourism. Under his watchful eye, the tourism industry has also blossomed, with job growth skyrocketing to 51,550 jobs in 2023, marking a remarkable 24% increase since 2015. That’s right, folks – more jobs mean more opportunities for locals!

Broadening Birmingham’s Appeal

Oros has not just been about numbers, though. He spearheaded the creation of a tourism master plan along with a sports tourism master plan for both Birmingham and Jefferson County. By collaborating with the BJCC Authority, he has worked on two important studies aimed at measuring current facilities and services against other major regional competitors. This strategic approach has only fortified Birmingham’s standing in the tourism industry.

International Outreach

“Over the last decade, we have been steadfast in our focus on driving economic growth through tourism,” Oros shared, emphasizing the city’s commitment to attracting international visitors and hosting significant meetings and conventions. The Greater Birmingham region is indeed gaining a reputation as a premier travel destination – and it’s all thanks to robust initiatives to enhance its offerings!

Beyond Birmingham

Oros didn’t just limit his efforts to Birmingham; he has been actively involved on various national and local boards. His commitment to the community is impressive, as he has helped out with initiatives like The World Games 2022, services for the Alabama Tourism Department Advisory Board, the Alabama Sports Council, and even serves as chairman for the 2025 World Police & Fire Games Local Host Committee. Talk about juggling a busy schedule!

A Well-Deserved Recognition

Recognized for his impactful contributions, Oros was a finalist for the Birmingham Business Journal’s prestigious “CEO of the Year” Awards in both 2017 and 2023, which speaks volumes about his dedication and influence within the community.

A Fond Farewell

As Oros prepares to transition into retirement, he expressed optimism about Birmingham’s future. “I remain profoundly optimistic about Birmingham’s future and its potential to inspire the world,” he remarked. It’s clear Oros has a deep affection for the city, citing its rich history, vibrant culture, and welcoming spirit as reasons why it is a true gem for visitors from around the globe.

A New Chapter Awaits

As a national search begins to find his successor, Oros will continue in his role until the new leader is onboard, ready to carry the torch of economic growth and tourism excellence. So whether you’re a local or a visitor, it’s an exciting time for Birmingham, and we can’t wait to see where the journey leads next!
