In a troubling turn of events in Birmingham, a community is left reeling after a shooting incident that injured two individuals, including an innocent 18-month-old girl. The shooting happened on Sunday night, November 17th, and has sparked a wave of local concern and anger.
Police have announced that Alex Dubose, a 21-year-old man, has been charged with a series of serious offenses following the incident. His charges include attempted murder, second-degree assault, and two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. The announcement was made on Friday, and Dubose is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail with a bond set at a staggering $135,000.
The chain of events began at around 6:45 p.m. on that fateful Sunday evening when Birmingham police were alerted that the toddler was at Children’s of Alabama, having been rushed there in a private vehicle. Initially thought to be caught in the crossfire of a shootout while she was riding in a car, further investigations revealed a much more chilling scenario.
According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, the shooting occurred at the 5-Way service station located at 4800 Eighth Ave. It was discovered that Dubose fired shots directly at the vehicle where the little girl was a passenger. The police later identified a second victim: an adult male who was injured while in a separate vehicle during the same incident. Thankfully, he was not an intended target either and was subsequently taken to UAB Hospital for treatment.
The response from the police has been swift. Dubose was apprehended on Tuesday by the department’s Crime Reduction Team. As the investigation unfolded, detectives suggested that Dubose was allegedly aiming at an adult family member who was in the vehicle with the victim. How terrifying is it to think that a mother could be driving with her child and suddenly find herself in such a dreadful situation?
The neighborhood is understandably shaken by this tragic event. Local residents are expressing their fear over gun violence and the toll it takes on families, especially when innocent children are caught in the line of fire. It’s a topic that is becoming all too common in our society, and people are starting to demand change.
As we reflect on this unfortunate event, it’s crucial for the community to come together to advocate against violence and support one another in these tough times. Parents everywhere are worrying about the safety of their children, particularly in places that should be safe havens. How do we ensure that our streets are safe for families? What measures can be taken to prevent such senseless acts of violence in the future?
As the legal proceedings unfold, residents will be watching closely to ensure that justice is served. Everyone hopes that the well-being of the injured toddler and the other victim is prioritized as they recover and heal.
This incident serves as a stark reminder that gun violence impacts us all, and it takes courage and unity from the entire community to foster a space where everyone, especially our children, can feel safe. Let’s stay alert, stay involved, and most importantly, let’s be kind to one another during these challenging times.
