Birmingham to Host Black Women’s Mental Health Summit

The city of Birmingham is preparing to host a significant event focusing on Black Women’s Mental Health. The 2024 Mental Health Equity and Liberation Summit, which is an initiative of the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute, is happening on July 11 at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. As part of the events scheduled for National Minority Mental Health Month, the summit will discuss the essential subject of mental health.

Details of the Hybrid Event

Offered in a hybrid format, attendees have the choice of experiencing the summit virtually or on-site. While the virtual access fee is set at $50, in-person attendance costs $75. A separate pricing structure is available for mental health clinicians. With the theme of Healing Justice and Collective Wellness, the event highlights the importance of addressing mental health concerns in a comprehensive manner.

Registration is obligatory for participating in the event, and the deadline for registration falls on July 8. 

Infusion of Diverse Perspectives

As declared by Dr. Nadia Johnson, Founder and CEO of the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute, the primary agenda is to propagate knowledge on delivering culturally responsive and equitable health care. The lectures and sessions in the summit are delivered by a range of speakers, each contributing their unique perspective based on their research on mental health and its effects on diverse communities.

Dr. Nadia Johnson expressed her views, stating, “There are variations of systemic inequities that significantly affect access to care and influence mental and holistic health.”

Special Address by Dr. Regina James

The keynote address will be given by Dr. Regina James, who is presently serving as the medical director for the American Psychiatric Association and the chief of the Division of Diversity and Health Equity. Her valuable insights will shed light on what it signifies to provide culturally appropriate care tailored to meet the unique needs of every population.
