On a sunny afternoon in Birmingham, the local tech community gathered to hear from Gavin Baum-Blake, co-founder and CEO of City Detect, a Tuscaloosa-based IT consulting company. He shared his thoughts on the strengths and areas for growth within Birmingham’s tech ecosystem.

Acknowledging Community Support

Since its inception in 2021, City Detect has tapped into various resources that Birmingham offers, particularly its thriving accelerators and incubators. “At the very outset, it’s really important for different ecosystems to have these opportunities that founders are able to tap into before they’re really able to get gas in the tank,” Baum-Blake remarked, emphasizing the significance of support when startups are in their early stages.

Baum-Blake pointed out that launching a startup demands considerable investment, not just from the founders but also involving their families. Therefore, he noted that having economic community partners stepping in provides invaluable support. “It’s nice to have economic community partners giving some buy-in as well,” he added.

Utilizing Local Resources

Throughout his tenure, City Detect has utilized numerous local resources, including the Bronze Valley Investment Accelerator, the Alabama Launchpad pitch competition, and several grant opportunities. These platforms have played an essential role in helping startups like City Detect find their footing.

Moreover, Baum-Blake highlighted the importance of local coworking and community spaces such as Innovation Depot and Hardware Park. “These places provide a space for founders to connect and form relationships,” he explained, showcasing how physical spaces can foster collaboration and innovation in the tech sector.

Community Leadership Matters

Baum-Blake also acknowledged the crucial role of community leaders in Birmingham’s tech landscape. He specifically mentioned the efforts of leaders like Deon Gordon from Tech Birmingham. “Having such a focal point in the tech community is invaluable,” he said, noting that its wide breadth of connections significantly benefits startup companies.

A Look at Funding Opportunities

One of the topics that stood out during Baum-Blake’s discussion was the challenge of securing funding in the area. City Detect recently closed a $2 million seed round of funding with the assistance of venture capital firms from Florida and Georgia. “We talked with a lot of folks and ultimately, we got our buy-in from Atlanta and South Florida,” he explained, suggesting that opportunities within Birmingham were lacking.

Despite this, Baum-Blake remains optimistic about the future. He noted that getting funding from outside sources has not diminished his hopes for the Birmingham investment landscape. “Frankly that’s really important for founders to know that they’re able to actually tap into the Birmingham investment community rather than having to go elsewhere,” he said, emphasizing the need for local investors to be more involved.

As the discussion came to a close, Baum-Blake conveyed his belief that there will be an increase in investment opportunities within the Birmingham community moving forward. “I think more checks getting written in Birmingham will continue to increase the level of community, and that’s an important element,” he stated, underscoring the potential for growth in Birmingham’s tech ecosystem.

As Baum-Blake remarked, “There’s a lot to gain from participating in the Birmingham ecosystem.” His insights provided a hopeful perspective for both current and future entrepreneurs in the area.
