Birmingham Teacher Sarah Moland Receives 2024 BCS Secondary Teacher of the Year Award

Birmingham Teacher Honored with Prestigious Award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — On the morning of September 17, 2024, Jackson-Olin High School was abuzz with excitement as family and consumer science teacher Sarah Moland received a surprise recognition from Birmingham Bowl staff. This special event celebrated Moland’s recent achievement of being named the 2024 BCS Secondary Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the 2024-25 Alabama Teacher of the Year.

Recognition and Reflection

The atmosphere inside the school was filled with joy and pride as staff and students gathered to witness the presentation. Birmingham Bowl representatives presented Moland with the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers honor, highlighting her dedication and hard work within the educational community.

“It’s a good feeling to be recognized for what you do every day that you enjoy doing,” Moland remarked during the celebration. “So, it’s really good to be recognized for something that you are not really trying hard for. I didn’t try to be the teacher of the year. That was never my goal. I just get up every day and do what I enjoy doing.”

Impact on Students

Moland has been noted for her innovative teaching methods and her ability to connect with students on a personal level. Her courses go beyond the classroom, encompassing valuable life skills that many students carry with them after graduation. Her passion for teaching has inspired countless young minds at Jackson-Olin High School, and the recognition serves to validate her contributions to education in Birmingham.

Looking Ahead to the Birmingham Bowl

The excitement surrounding Moland’s award came just in time for the 18th Birmingham Bowl, which is scheduled to take place at Protective Stadium on December 27, 2024. This annual college football event draws fans and teams together, showcasing the spirit of competition and community pride that Birmingham embodies.

The Community’s Support

The presentation was attended by various school and community members who take pride in fostering an environment where educators like Moland can thrive. Local leaders and fellow teachers expressed their admiration for her achievement, emphasizing the importance of supporting teachers who make a significant difference in students’ lives.

Cultivating Future Leaders

With the educational landscape continually evolving, recognitions like those received by Moland are crucial. They not only honor dedicated educators but also inspire future teachers to pursue excellence in their careers. Moland’s story serves as a reminder of the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the next generation of leaders.

As Birmingham continues to champion its local educators, the community looks forward to the upcoming Birmingham Bowl, where the focus on teamwork, dedication, and excellence will be celebrated both on and off the field. For teachers and students alike, it’s a time to come together and recognize all the hard work that goes into making a vibrant educational environment.

A Message of Gratitude

In her closing remarks, Moland expressed gratitude for the support she has received from her colleagues and the community. “It really takes a village,” she noted, highlighting the collective effort involved in cultivating a successful educational atmosphere.

This recognition is not just a personal achievement for Moland; it represents the commitment of all educators to inspire and empower the youth of Birmingham. As the school year progresses, the positive impacts of her teaching will surely continue to be felt within the halls of Jackson-Olin High School and beyond.
