Exciting Changes Coming to Birmingham Streets!
Hey there, Birmingham! If you’ve noticed some sounds of construction and workers bustling around your neighborhood lately, you’re likely witnessing a big step toward better roads. That’s right! Birmingham is patting itself on the back for kicking off a huge {road resurfacing project} this fall as part of a plan that started way back in 2017. So, get ready to say goodbye to those bumpy, pothole-filled streets!
What’s the Plan?
The city is set to repave a whopping 36 miles of its streets, which means 246 street segments are getting a well-deserved facelift. This project isn’t just about making the roads smoother; it also includes some key improvements like sidewalk repairs and making the roads safer for everyone. Talk about a win-win!
Rick Journey, the communications director for Birmingham, shared that the Department of Transportation has been working hard to figure out which streets are most in need. They’ve assessed things like whether new bicycle lanes or pedestrian lanes are necessary. This way, the project not only enhances the streets but also promotes safer travel for everyone.
A Glimpse into the Motivation
So, why all this effort? Mayor Woodfin had a vision when he took office. He saw the long list of streets needing a makeover—streets already identified and approved by the city council. With the funding finally in place, the team was ready to get to work!
For the residents, this is a cause for celebration. Melody King, a resident who has called Birmingham home for almost 30 years, is particularly thrilled. She’s been eagerly waiting for the paving in front of her house. “It really changes the neighborhood,” she says. She added that resurfacing improves property values and makes people driving through feel more comfortable. Plus, it’s much safer for kids, who usually love playing outside!
What Lies Ahead
Although this marks the end of the five-year resurfacing plan, Journey was quick to assure us that the work here isn’t done. “We will keep looking at which streets need it the most,” he said, hinting that more revitalization efforts are on the way for Birmingham’s neighborhoods.
As for how long we’ll see the work? The resurfacing is set to continue through the fall, so keep your eyes peeled. Maybe you’ll catch sight of the shiny new asphalt on streets near you!
Stay in the Loop
If you want to know exactly which streets are getting the upgrade, there’s an interactive map available online. It’s a neat way to keep track, especially if you’re curious about how your daily routes might change.
So, Birmingham, buckle up (or rather, enjoy the smoother rides!) as we all look forward to safer and more inviting streets. Here’s to making our city just a little bit better, one street at a time!
