Birmingham residents looking to throw a memorable get-together may soon find it easier, thanks to a new startup launched by local entrepreneur Joshua Gilmer. His company, Luau, is designed to reduce the stress and logistical nightmares that often accompany planning parties and events.
Gilmer, who previously founded the graphic design studio Huebris, developed the idea for Luau from his personal experiences in organizing family gatherings. He noticed an uptick in people wanting to host parties, likely stemming from a desire to reconnect after the isolation many felt during the Covid-19 pandemic. “I thought AI could be used to get people to interact more with each other and less online,” he explained.
At the heart of Luau is an AI agent designed to help users manage party logistics and connect with party guests. This technology aims to streamline various elements of event planning, ranging from sending invitations to tracking RSVPs. Currently, Gilmer is in the process of gathering feedback from potential customers to shape the platform’s features. He specifically aims to cater to college students and parents of young children who wish to engage more actively in community events.
During his research, Gilmer found that existing platforms like Eventbrite and Partiful failed to meet the needs of many users. “The really big players in this space are losing a lot of their traction,” Gilmer noted, highlighting concerns from party planners who feel overwhelmed by subscription fees. “One of the people I interviewed said they throw three to four quarterly events a year and don’t need a subscription for that and don’t want to pay Eventbrite $300 to do something like that,” he remarked.
The pricing model for Luau is still being developed. Gilmer is contemplating offering the platform for free to those with smaller event needs while creating a premium service for larger functions. This flexible pricing structure is aimed at making Luau accessible to everyone, regardless of their event planning scale.
To further enhance the user experience, Gilmer is considering partnerships with local businesses, such as recipe websites and party decorators. Such collaborations would not only drive traffic to their sites but would also provide valuable resources for Luau users. “There’s a real opportunity to connect what people need for their parties under one roof,” he said.
Another innovative feature Gilmer is exploring is “gamifying” the platform. He mentioned ideas like rewarding users with fun titles, such as “last minute hero” for those who step in to lend a hand unexpectedly during party preparations. This playful element aims to foster a sense of community among users and make the planning process more enjoyable.
As Luau is still in its early stages, Gilmer is primarily relying on word of mouth to generate interest rather than traditional marketing strategies. “What I know after living here my whole life is that everything happens by word of mouth,” he stated. “People start to adopt things based on what their friends tell them, not really based on ads or what they see online.” He is optimistic about the positive network effects that can arise from his local roots.
With the rise in party planning and the growing desire for social interaction, Luau could be more than just a tool; it might represent a cultural shift back to in-person gatherings. As Gilmer continues to refine his platform, Birmingham could soon become a hub for easier and more enjoyable event planning.
