Birmingham Community Reels from Weekend Shootings

Birmingham, AL – The city is mourning after a violent weekend that left two men dead from gunfire incidents in Birmingham and Fairfield. As the community comes together to process these events, authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shootings.

First Incident in Birmingham

On Saturday night, authorities received notifications from Shot Spotter, a city-run gunfire detection system, alerting West Precinct officers to shots fired just after 9:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of First Avenue West. Officers arrived promptly at the scene where they discovered Traiquielle Raheem Chambers, 29, collapsed in the middle of the street, surrounded by numerous shell casings.

According to Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, the preliminary investigation indicates that Chambers had been involved in a verbal altercation prior to the shooting. “At this time, it is unclear how the altercation ended up at this location,” said Wade on Saturday night. Eyewitness accounts suggest that Chambers might have returned fire before he was fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:49 p.m.

Second Incident in Fairfield

Earlier that same day, law enforcement was alerted to another shooting incident at the Budgetel Inns & Suites on Kelco Place in Fairfield. Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call just before 11:30 a.m. regarding a person who had been shot. Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the suspect, who was found holed up in one of the hotel rooms.

According to sheriff’s spokesman Henry Irby, the suspect surrendered without further altercations. Tragically, Paul Justin Stanley, 35, was found deceased at the hotel and was pronounced dead at 11:49 a.m. Details surrounding this fatal incident remain limited, as formal charges against the suspect have not yet been released.

Community Response

Shocked and saddened, community members are grappling with the implications of these events. Both victims, Chambers and Stanley, were reported to be residents of Birmingham, and their untimely deaths have left friends and family reeling.

Authorities encourage anyone who may have further information regarding the shooting that involved Chambers to reach out to Birmingham detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777. Your cooperation could be vital in piecing together the events that led to these tragic outcomes.

As the investigations continue, the Birmingham community is reminded of the impact that gun violence can have on neighborhoods and families. Local leaders and residents alike are called to support one another during this trying time, emphasizing the importance of unity and response to violence.
