In a tragic turn of events, Birmingham has found itself at the center of a shocking homicide case that unfolded on the evening of September 24, 2024. A confrontation at the Big Boy Convenience Store on Pearson Avenue SW has left one young man dead and another facing serious charges despite not being the one to pull the trigger.
The day began like any other until around 5 p.m. when chaos erupted at the convenience store. Malike Williams, aged 26, was shot and ultimately succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to UAB Hospital. The shooting seems to have stemmed from a fallout over a social media post, which, as many of us know, can spark heated disputes.
According to police officials, the feud involved three individuals: Williams, his cousin Brandon Quartez Jemison, and a third man who is believed to have fired the fatal shots. Officer Truman Fitzgerald described the situation: “One party had a gun, the second party had a gun, and one of those males fired shots.” In this case, the shooter claims he was defending himself against Williams, who was perceived as the aggressor.
Brandon Jemison is now charged with felony murder, which has raised eyebrows in the legal community. He didn’t actually pull the trigger, but under Alabama’s accomplice liability law, being involved in a crime that leads to someone’s death can lead to serious consequences. Jemison participated in the confrontation, which culminated in the attempted murder of the shooter, thereby implicating him in Williams’ death.
As it stands, Jemison has been booked into the Jefferson County Jail and is facing a bond amounting to $60,000. Charging documents state, “Jemison caused the death of Williams by participating in the attempted murder of the intended victim.” In simpler terms, his involvement in the deadly encounter has led to a heavy legal burden, even though he wasn’t the one who fired the shots.
The drama did not end there. Just hours after the shooting that claimed Williams’ life, tragedy struck again. Damone Gardner, Williams’ best friend, was shot and killed less than four hours later in what is believed to be related to tensions from Williams’ death. At this moment, police have not made any arrests in Gardner’s case, leaving the community reeling from the back-to-back violence.
Birmingham residents are understandably shaken by these events. Violence stemming from disputes, especially over social media, is a problem many communities face. The unfortunate deaths of both Williams and Gardner have sparked conversations about how to handle conflicts constructively without resorting to violence.
People in the area are banding together to support one another, as many are left wondering how they can prevent such tragedies in the future. The community is calling for increased awareness and activities for the youth, focusing on conflict resolution and healthy communication. The hope is that this hard lesson serves as a reminder to think twice before engaging in dangerous conflicts.
With Jemison facing serious charges, and the second murder still unsolved, the Birmingham community is eager for justice. Residents are left asking: how can we protect one another and avoid needless violence? Only time will tell how this deeply troubling case will unfold, but one thing is clear: it’s a moment for reflection and action in Birmingham.
As this story continues to develop, we encourage everyone to look out for each other and prioritize discussions that promote peace. After all, every life is precious, and as a community, we can strive to build an environment where violence is a thing of the past.
