News Summary

Birmingham has opened a new 25,000 square foot warehouse at 8250 Birmingport Road dedicated to handling cold rolled steel coils. This facility aims to enhance the local manufacturing ecosystem, projecting an economic impact of around $1.2 million. It was built with the collaboration of various stakeholders and is designed to streamline transportation of goods, particularly to Alabama’s automotive industry. The new warehouse represents a significant step in developing Birmingham’s logistics capabilities and supporting future economic growth.

Birmingham Unveils New Warehouse to Boost Shipping Capacity at Port

Birmingham has just welcomed a shiny new addition to its Port, and it’s making waves in the shipping and logistics world! A brand new warehouse has been completed at 8250 Birmingport Road, nestled on the scenic Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River. Spanning an impressive 25,000 square feet, this facility is specifically designed to handle cold rolled steel coils – crucial for the region’s bustling logistics operations.

A Facility Like No Other

This strikingly spacious structure sports a solid concrete floor and could easily be mistaken for an indoor football practice facility! However, instead of football fields and touchdowns, this warehouse is all about supporting Birmingham’s manufacturing scene, especially in the automobile sector. The special slab construction means that these substantial steel coils are safe from the elements, as they definitely can’t be exposed to weather.

Building a Vision

Birmingham City Council President has expressed that this warehouse is more than just a building—it’s a pivotal part of a grand vision for Birmingport. The intention behind all this effort is to bolster the local economy and enhance connectivity via rail and waterway to various markets.

Expected Economic Upsurge

The arrival of this facility is expected to create an economic impact of approximately $1.2 million. This isn’t merely a number on paper, either; projections indicate that retail sales could exceed $800,000, and overall, the total retail sales impact could approach an astonishing $6 million. Now that’s a reason to celebrate!

Connecting the Dots

The steel coils shipped to the state’s Mobile port will travel inland by barge for use in local automotive manufacturing and beyond. Alabama has a rich automotive history, filled with a myriad of steel stamping businesses that play a vital role in the industry. This new development enhances that long-standing reputation and aligns with the community’s needs.

Collaborative Efforts

Creating this world-class facility was no small feat; it involved an impressive collaboration among various stakeholders, including state officials, the City of Birmingham, and the Birmingham Jefferson County Port Authority. Logistics company Watco also played a major role in this project, which was made possible through an inland port infrastructure grant offered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

Efficiency through Barges

Watco’s Port Birmingham Terminal boasts an expansive 182 acres, complete with five barge docks and a heavy-lift crane to transport not just steel but also coal, synthetic gypsum, scrap, and pig iron. This setup streamlines the movement of heavy commodities like steel coils, as barges can carry dozens at a time, significantly reducing truck traffic on busy highways. This means a decrease in infrastructure damage while ensuring safer transport options.

A Rich History

Birmingport has a storied history dating back to its establishment in 1920. It became operational with Tennessee Coal and Iron in 1930, and U.S. Steel began utilizing the port in 1967. Fast forward to 2016, when the Birmingham Jefferson County Port Authority was formed, focused on enhancing the port’s capabilities.

Looking to the Future

The warehouse project was first announced last year amid significant enthusiasm from regional economic development leaders. It is poised to act as a catalyst for future growth, establishing Birmingham as a pivotal economic hub in Alabama’s manufacturing landscape. With such exciting developments on the horizon, the city’s future certainly looks bright!
