Birmingham: A Journey of Resilience and Hope
Birmingham has seen many stories of strength and perseverance, but one story that truly stands out is that of Don Mosely, the 10th Judicial Circuit County Administrator in Jefferson County. From facing the wrath of Hurricane Katrina to overcoming personal trials as a college student, Mosely is a testament to the power of determination. His life paints a vivid picture of resilience and hope.
Starting from Humble Beginnings
Growing up as one of nine siblings in Louisiana, Mosely had his fair share of challenges. Reflecting on his childhood, he remarks, “I was a first-generation college student. My family, we didn’t have it like that.” He didn’t know much about college but felt inspired to pursue it after a coach recognized his potential. “I just knew I wanted to go from the time I was in high school because there was a football coach that told me he thought I was worthy of college,” he said.
Facing Financial Struggles in College
During his time at Miles College, located in Fairfield, Alabama, Mosely faced hardships. Money was tight, and he navigated life with limited resources. “At that time all I had was minutes on my phone. It wasn’t even a flip phone. I used to try to go home and ask and beg for money, but they couldn’t support me,” he shared. Education felt daunting without a familial support system. Simple tasks, like figuring out cafeteria meals, became overwhelming.
Finding Support
When Mosely eventually found a job at TeleTech, now TTEC Holdings Inc., it marked a turning point. The company’s closure in 2008 led him to temporary homelessness. “I was able to buy myself some clothes and have food. I found a friend that had a house in Fairfield that allowed me to live there until school started,” he remembered. Mosely’s breakthrough came when he became involved with the TRIO Student Support Services program, which provided him the structure and support he desperately needed. “I had a praying wife,” he said, emphasizing how her presence and support motivated him.
Chasing Dreams Despite Setbacks
From childhood, Mosely dreamed of becoming a lawyer. Even when others doubted him, he remained determined. During a school activity where students took an Altitude Test to predict future careers, Mosely and another student both received “scientist and lawyer.” But when classmates chose the other student as the likely lawyer, it fueled his desire even more. “She said I couldn’t do it, and that sealed my motivation for becoming a lawyer,” Mosely explained.
Life Changes and New Responsibilities
Relocating to Birmingham after Hurricane Katrina was a significant change for the family. Mosely reminisced, “I had already applied to schools in Louisiana, and the next thing you know, Katrina washed it all away.” The resilience of his family paved the way as they built a new life in Alabama. With family dynamics that included five sisters and four brothers, Mosely felt a weight on his shoulders to set a good example. “I had to be the shining example, so I just couldn’t come home empty-handed,” he said.
The Path to Law School
His journey to law school wasn’t straightforward. After graduating from Miles in 2011, he took up an internship and attempted a master’s program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Life unfolded with unexpected difficulties, but through it all, he persisted, working multiple jobs to support his growing family. “I had four jobs just so I could make ends meet,” he remembered. It was his wife, Whitney, who encouraged him during his tough times. Her unwavering belief in him kept him motivated.
A Bright Future Ahead
After taking the plunge to apply to law school with encouragement from Whitney, he found himself on the path he had always dreamed of. Mosely graduated from the Birmingham School of Law in 2018 and today, he proudly serves as a county administrator while being an active father to his three children, aged 11, 10, and 6. His family is also looking to adopt more children as their journey continues.
A Beacon of Inspiration
With his continuous drive to succeed, Mosely was recently recognized as an honoree for the Birmingham Business Journal’s “40 under 40”. This recognition is not just a personal achievement but a beacon of inspiration for his family and many others. “I always tell my kids: ‘I was the first because I knew you guys wouldn’t be the last,’” he stated proudly.
