Birmingham, Ala. – Earlier this week, the Birmingham Police Department made an announcement that brought a blend of relief and sadness to the residents of Five Points South. An arrest has been made connected to the mass shooting that occurred last month outside Hush Lounge, where four people lost their lives and 17 others sustained injuries.
The devastating incident took place on September 3rd, leaving many in the community shaken. As the police continue their investigations, they are also handling separate but equally tragic cases from earlier in the summer. For instance, a mass shooting in North Birmingham on July 13th resulted in the deaths of four more individuals, with 10 others injured. Unfortunately, no arrests have been made in that incident.
Birmingham resident Michael Stubs expressed his feelings about the situation, sharing that he had a fortunate hunch to stay away from Hush Lounge on the night of the shooting – which fell on his birthday. “I think it’s very sad,” he said. “It’s sad somebody lose their family in something like that.” Stubs is holding on to hope that justice will come for the victims of both tragedies.
Stubs also provided insight into his feelings of safety in the area: “At night time I be kinda scared, because I walk from the store, on my p’s and q’s but daytime I don’t worry about it.” It’s a sentiment that many in the neighborhood can relate to, as concerns about safety loom large.
Another lifelong Birmingham resident, Jerome Richardson, shared that while he personally feels safe, he is concerned about the general perception of safety among others. “I feel safe, but I don’t know about the rest of the people in this community. Do they feel safe?” he pondered.
Moreover, Richardson noted the disparity in media coverage and police response between the two tragedies. “Four people got killed over here, four people got killed over there, this was first, that one second and they put $100,000 reward over there, it was all over the world news, this I recon just made Birmingham news,” he remarked.
Responses from the Birmingham Police Department have been sought regarding the status of the ongoing investigations, including whether any motives have been identified or what steps are being taken to resolve the unsolved case from July. The police have consistently stressed the importance of community involvement in these situations. They have appealed to the public, urging anyone with information related to either case to step forward.
Residents like Richardson feel that closure is crucial, not just for the families involved, but for the entire community. “They need to come forward and let them know so people can get some closure on who killed their mothers, sisters, brothers, you know. That’s what they need to do,” he said.
Stubs echoed that message, urging those responsible to turn themselves in. “Just come forward and do your time. You were wrong; something so small ended up so big, you didn’t have to take no lives,” he implored.
Residents are encouraged to reach out to the Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 with any tips. Additionally, individuals can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777, and there may be cash rewards for useful information.
The community continues to seek healing and justice as they navigate the pain left behind by these shootings. As the investigations unfold, Birmingham remains determined to unite for safety and justice in the face of tragedy.
