Birmingham Remembers Tyesha Brown, Influential Filmmaker and Community Advocate

Birmingham Mourns the Loss of Tyesha Brown, A Creative Force

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the vibrant city of Birmingham has lost a shining star of the indie film scene, Tyesha Brown. The beloved filmmaker, known for her infectious warmth and dedication to uplifting local talent, passed away on Friday in Dayton, Ohio, at the tender age of 42. Her contributions to the arts community in Birmingham and beyond will not be easily forgotten.

A Legacy of Love and Community

Friends and family are coming forward to remember Tyesha for the incredible legacy she leaves behind. “I want people to know that she had an impact on the world around her,” shared her sister, Daphne Brown, who also lives in the Ensley community. “Although she didn’t have any kids, she left her footprints on our family and cities like Los Angeles, Memphis, and Baltimore.” Daphne couldn’t hold back her admiration, labeling her sister the epitome of love. “When you read your Bible and it says, ‘love is patient, love is kind’, that’s my sister. There wasn’t a bad bone in her body,” she recalled with tears in her eyes.

Growing up, the sister duo was inseparable. “You wouldn’t find Tyesha without me, and me without her,” Daphne reminisced. Their bond was unbreakable, with Tyesha’s dedication and infectious laughter illuminating every room she entered. Daphne added, “I will miss all things Tyesha.”

Creativity that Shaped a Community

Tyesha Brown was born and raised in Ensley, graduating from Ensley High School before pursuing dual degrees in journalism and film studies at Morgan State University in 2005. Her journey into filmmaking began with a high school project linked to Girls Inc., leading to her award-winning first film, “Destani’s Eyes”. This film sparked a passionate career in storytelling that forever enriched Birmingham’s cultural landscape.

With a resume that glitters with experience on major TV productions like “The Voice”, “Big Brother”, and “Survivor”, Tyesha knew how to blend her Hollywood knowledge with her love for her hometown. In 2023, she founded IAMCLASSYBROWN Productions to focus on telling unique urban stories through films, comedies, and biopics that resonate with people from all walks of life.

Her latest work, “Checkmate”, showcased both seasoned and emerging talent from Birmingham and Detroit, with veteran actor Clifton Powell joining the cast. Tyesha was also thrilled to announce a distribution deal with Dreamland Media for one of her final projects, “Heaux Week”, which is now available to stream on Tubi. Her commitment didn’t end there—she partnered with another Birmingham-based production company for the upcoming release of “Nate And These Nutz” in early 2025.

A Mentor Like No Other

Beyond her accomplishments in filmmaking, Tyesha was known for her passionate spirit as a mentor and educator. She collaborated with several local organizations like Flourish and Make It Happen Theater Company to inspire and teach the next generation of creatives in Birmingham. Her infectious “I can do it too” approach filled local artists and filmmakers with hope and confidence.

Having faced personal loss at a young age, Tyesha’s life was shaped by resilience, which she imparted to everyone around her. Her bond with her sister, Daphne, was a source of strength and inspiration, one they cherished deeply.

Carrying the Torch Forward

As Birmingham grapples with this loss, Tyesha Brown’s indomitable spirit—her passion for creativity and unwavering love for her community—continues to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her loving grandmother, her sister, two nieces, and a wide circle of friends and collaborators who will carry her legacy forward.

In light of her passing, Tyesha’s family is inviting those wishing to honor her memory to contribute to her homegoing arrangements. Donations can be made to assist with expenses through a dedicated platform, enabling her supporters to pay their respects and help carry her light into the future.

Tyesha Brown changed lives with her art, her mentorship, and her big heart, proving that even in the shortest of times, one can leave a lasting impact.
