Birmingham Promotes 988 Suicide Hotline Awareness During September’s Suicide Prevention Month

Birmingham Residents Encouraged to Use 988 Suicide Hotline During September’s Awareness Month

As September marks Suicide Prevention Month, Birmingham is placing a spotlight on the impact of the recently launched 988 suicide hotline. Designed as a 24/7 crisis support line, 988 serves as a free and confidential resource for individuals in distress.

New Hotline Gains Momentum

According to Daisy Delmore, Operations Director at Crisis Center Inc., the 988 hotline, which became operational less than two years ago, has already shown promising results. “We saw approximately 2,200 calls in June 2023. Now, in June 2024, we’re approaching 3,200 calls, and that number is only expected to rise,” Delmore shared.

One recent change that may further enhance the hotline’s effectiveness is the introduction of geo-routing technology. This system, which was implemented just last Tuesday, allows calls to be routed to local resources based on the caller’s location rather than their area code. Delmore anticipates this will increase the volume of calls from specific areas, stating, “Calls in each area are expected to rise by a percentage.”

Daily Call Volume and Community Impact

The call center typically sees fluctuations in daily calls, but trends have emerged. Delmore noted that they receive between 10 to 20 calls during the day and between 15 to 30 calls at night. This steady activity suggests a growing awareness and utilization of the hotline, offering a lifeline to those in crisis.

“I know that 988 has made a difference. It has had a significant impact on many lives. Suicide rates are alarming, with statistics showing that every 11 minutes someone in the U.S. loses their life to suicide. Because of platforms like 988, those in need can now receive the critical support and care they deserve,” Delmore emphasized.

An Open Door for Help

For those feeling overwhelmed, it’s important to know that you are not alone. Delmore reassured the public about the anonymous nature of the hotline, saying, “If you want to remain confidential, that’s perfectly fine. Our primary goal is to ensure you know there is a place to seek help.”

Support is readily available for anyone struggling with thoughts of self-harm or who knows someone in a difficult situation. “We want people to understand there are individuals waiting and willing to help,” Delmore stated.

Accessibility and Encouragement

The 988 hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and throughout the entire year. Residents of Birmingham and its surrounding areas are encouraged to utilize this resource whenever they or someone they know may need assistance.

As we navigate through Suicide Prevention Month, remember that support is just a call away. Whether you’re in crisis or seeking guidance on behalf of a loved one, the 988 hotline offers a crucial lifeline to those who need it most.
