Birmingham Celebrates Five Years of Promise: A Pathway to Success for Students

Birmingham, Alabama, is buzzing with excitement as the Birmingham Promise recently celebrated its fifth anniversary with a lively college and career fair. This noteworthy event was held on Thursday, October 11, 2024, and brought together local students, educators, and community leaders to reflect on the profound impact the program has made in the lives of many young people.

A Look Back at Five Years of Impact

Since its inception in 2019, the Birmingham Promise has been dedicated to providing paid internships and scholarships for students from Birmingham City Schools. In its relatively short history, the program has achieved incredible outcomes. Over 1,600 graduates have taken the next step toward higher education, and the statistics are impressive: more than 70 of these students have already earned their college degrees or completed career credentials.

One of the standout features of Birmingham Promise is its commitment to offering paid internships for high school students in their final year. To date, over 300 students have had the opportunity to participate, gaining invaluable work experience that prepares them for their future careers. This year’s anniversary was a moment to commemorate these achievements while highlighting personal success stories.

Inspiring Stories of Transformation

During the anniversary celebration, we heard from graduates like Sarah Granderson, who shared her journey of growth and resilience. Initially aiming for out-of-state private universities, she faced rejection yet found a silver lining through Birmingham Promise. “Although I did not get into my dream school, I got something much better: A debt-free college education,” she proclaimed, embodying the spirit of determination that the program fosters.

Advancing Educational Attainment

The Birmingham Promise has made significant strides in uplifting the local community’s youth. Executive Director Samantha Williams articulated the program’s success in increasing the number of students continuing their education, noting improvements in two-year college completion rates and optimism for four-year graduation rates. It’s exciting to see how the program is not just a passing initiative; it’s making lasting differences in the educational landscape of Birmingham.

Investment in the Future

Birmingham’s Mayor Randall Woodfin emphasized the importance of this initiative: “This is not charity. Birmingham Promise is the largest economic mobility program in the state of Alabama for high school students.” This underlines the significance of the program as a vital support system for the youth of Birmingham.

In a generous show of faith in the program’s mission, Bill Demchak, Chairman and CEO of PNC Bank, announced a remarkable $10 million investment to support Birmingham Promise. “$10 million is an easy investment. We invest in communities, and we know we’ll get it back,” he shared, highlighting the vision for sustained growth that lies ahead.

The Power of Community Support

Much of Birmingham Promise’s success is attributed to the unwavering support from local businesses and individual donors. Samantha Williams highlighted this collaboration, reminding everyone that “none of it would be possible without the support of many partners.” The true strength of the program lies in the collective effort of the entire community to uplift its students.

The Road Ahead

As Birmingham continues to celebrate these achievements, the focus shifts to the future. With ongoing support and the determination of its students, there’s every reason to believe that Birmingham Promise will keep paving pathways to success for local youth. Graduation rates will hopefully keep climbing, and more students will embrace the opportunities afforded to them through this remarkable initiative.

Indeed, Birmingham is building a brighter future—one student at a time.
