Birmingham Police Charge Suspect in Fatal Shooting

Birmingham, Ala. – The Birmingham Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of 20-year-old Paul Devaried Terry, Jr., who was tragically shot and killed on Friday, October 11, following a verbal altercation near East Lake Park.

The suspect, identified as Anthony Rudolfo Major, a 27-year-old Birmingham resident, was taken into custody after an incident that unfolded around midday in the 8200 block of 4th Avenue North. According to Birmingham Police Department Sergeant LaQuitta Wade, officers received a call reporting a shooting at approximately 12:19 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers found that Terry had fled the scene to a nearby shed, where he was later discovered lying unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the scene and confirmed that he had succumbed to his injuries. “The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim came to a residence in the 8200 block of 4th Avenue North,” explained Sgt. Wade. “While at the residence, a verbal altercation occurred between the victim and the suspect, possibly outside of the residence. During the verbal dispute, the suspect shot the victim.”

According to Sergeant Wade, following the shooting, Terry managed to escape and ran to the 300 block of 83rd Street North before collapsing inside the shed. His death marks a significant loss for the community, which is still reeling from the violent event. “This situation is heartbreaking, and our community has been affected deeply,” remarked one local resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

Major is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail, with no bond set at this time. He is facing serious charges that could lead to significant legal consequences if he is convicted. The incident has raised concerns about safety in the area, and residents are calling for more community policing efforts to address crime.

City officials have reached out offering their condolences to Terry’s family and loved ones. “Losing a young life like this is always tragic, and our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time,” stated a spokesperson for the city. Efforts are being made to engage community members in discussions around safety and preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, Birmingham Police are encouraging anyone with additional information about the incident or the individuals involved to come forward. They are working diligently to gather all facts surrounding the case, ensuring that justice is served for Terry and his family.

In the wake of the incident, the community has come together to support one another. Vigils and gatherings have begun to spring up in honor of Terry, reflecting the shared grief and resilience often found in Birmingham’s neighborhoods. The response from local organizations has also been significant, with many providing resources and support for those affected by the recent violence.

The Birmingham Police Department is committed to keeping the community safe and will continue to work closely with residents to address concerns stemming from this tragic event. With the investigation ongoing, updates from the department are expected as new information becomes available.

This story serves as a reminder of the importance of community safety and the impacts that violence can have on families and neighbors. As more details are uncovered, the Birmingham area stands united in seeking healing and justice.
