Birmingham Police Acknowledges $5,000 Sign-On Bonus Helps But Staffing Remains an Issue

In a recent public address, the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) communicated that a $5,000 sign-on bonus they introduced back in 2022 has helped boost recruitment efforts. However, the department continues to grapple with staffing shortages.

Sign-on Bonus a Big Draw but More Recruits Needed

Corporal Vincent Brown of the BPD shared that the bonus has been effective in attracting attention from potential recruits. “It definitely is beneficial because we do have candidates that call and say, ‘Hey, y’all still offering that $5,000 sign-on bonus?’” commented Brown. But despite the lure of extra cash, the department still struggles with an ongoing staffing shortage, like most departments nationwide.

A Universal Challenge Among Law Enforcement Agencies

“Like any department, we are all short. We are just doing our best to let everybody in. As many people as we can. It’s about the same as any other department. It’s just a matter of getting people in here and making sure they stay,” further explained Corporal Kiley Bell. Filling vacancies remains a considerable hurdle despite the inducement offered by bonus incentives.

Exploring Careers in Law Enforcement

Corporal Bell also encouraged any individuals on the fence about a career in law enforcement to try an internship or participate in the department’s ‘ride-along’ program. Such exposure to a day in the life of police officer can provide invaluable insight.

“So if you want to get an idea of what we do in everyday life as police, just do a ride-along for maybe a day to see if you like it,” suggested Bell.

Getting to Know the City’s Positive Aspects

Bell further pointed out that engaging with the police department can help residents see Birmingham through a different lens, allowing them to notice not just the challenges, but also the city’s positives.

“People should give Birmingham a chance. Because people look at the negatives with the city. But they don’t see how much positivity the city also has. They only see the negatives so you don’t really see the positives until they get into it,” he urged.

Moving Forward

While the BPD continues to attract new recruits using the sign-on bonus, it remains steadfast in its endeavor to seek out more staffing solutions.
