Birmingham, Ala. — The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) is actively seeking new recruits in response to the urgent need for public safety personnel following the recent mass shooting in the city. In a call to action, Officer Truman Fitzgerald emphasized, “The City of Birmingham needs you.” With a commitment to community service on the line, the department is inviting those interested to participate in the upcoming Physical Agility Screening this Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Birmingham Police Academy.
Candidates who show up for the screening should be prepared to showcase their physical fitness. The screening includes a timed 1.5-mile run, a vital part of evaluating potential officers’ stamina. In addition to the run, there is an obstacle course that assesses more specific skill sets required for police work.
“The obstacle course tests their ability to balance, climb through a window, and then towards the end is the dummy drag, which requires you to pull a 165-pound dummy,” Fitzgerald explained. These exercises are designed to imitate the physical challenges officers might face in real-life emergency situations.
Those who successfully pass the physical agility screening will proceed to more extensive evaluations, which include a thorough background check, a polygraph exam, and a psychological evaluation. The BPD aims to ensure that all new recruits maintain not only physical readiness but also the mental fortitude necessary for police work.
In an effort to attract more applicants, the Birmingham Police Department is offering a generous $5,000 sign-on bonus. According to the department’s pay scale, new recruits can expect competitive salaries that increase with experience and service. Officer Fitzgerald noted, “The ideal candidate has a heart for public service and good social skills.”
Fitzgerald also shared optimistic news, indicating that recruits could start their careers as early as November. “In a few months you can have a career for the rest of your life at the Birmingham Police Department,” he noted, highlighting the potential for long-term employment in a challenging yet rewarding field.
Individuals interested in applying should wear athletic clothing suitable for physical activity. Additionally, candidates are encouraged to bring a government-issued driver’s license and a completed application, which can be found on the BPD website.
The push for new recruits reflects a larger commitment by the Birmingham Police Department to strengthen community safety and responsiveness, especially in light of the recent tragic events. As Officer Fitzgerald pointed out, those who pursue a career in law enforcement have the chance to make a profound impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
For those considering a career in law enforcement, this Saturday’s screening presents an important opportunity not only to pursue a job that serves the community but also to join a dedicated team ready to protect and serve Birmingham’s residents.
