The incident occurred on March 8, 2024, when the U-Haul truck, significantly higher than the parking deck’s clearance limit, struck a beam causing concern for the structure’s integrity and trapping three individuals inside the vehicle.
In the aftermath of the incident, the safety of the Cortland Vesta apartments in the Highland Park neighborhood was brought into question. This led to an immediate response from the building management, Commencing with the temporary closure of the parking’s front entrance. Building residents are currently being advised to use the back entry in the meanwhile.
With safety being their priority, Cortland’s management swiftly employed an independent engineering firm to assess the structural damage and provide the needed steps to maintain the safety of the parking deck. According to the building management’s recent release, the engineer’s assessment and subsequent correctional plan was implemented over the weekend, effectively deeming the structure safe for use as of March 10th, 2024.
For residents of the Cortland Vesta apartments, the news of the parking deck’s safety clearance comes as a relief. Many have expressed to the media that they do not harbor any concerns about parking their vehicles in the structure moving forward.
This unfortunate episode illuminates the importance of clearances in parking structures and the role they play in the prevention of accidents. The parking deck where this collision occurred bears markings indicating a clearance limit of under nine feet.
Furthermore, it’s revealed that the U-Haul truck used in this incident requires a minimum height clearance of 11-12 feet, as per U-Haul’s official website. Acknowledging this, a spokesperson for the company emphasized the need for drivers to understand and pay attention to their vehicles’ dimensions, specifically height, before entering low-clearance structures.
To this end, U-Haul encourages users to note clearly marked decals inside the driver’s cab that detail vehicle height. They also advise drivers to be mindful of tree limbs, low-clearance bridges, parking garages, and even fast food drive-thru windows. Additionally, although damage coverage is available when renting a U-Haul truck, it’s important to note that certain protection plans do not extend to collisions caused by overhead clearances.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Birmingham’s Cortland Vesta apartments seem to have weathered the storm. With the prompt response of its management team, residents can now park in safety, while others might take away some crucial lessons on vehicle height clearance and overall parking structure safety.
