In a significant transition for Birmingham’s community landscape, Amy Templeton, the CEO of the McWane Science Center, has announced her retirement, effective at the end of this year. Templeton has guided the organization since 2012 and has been instrumental in its growth and evolution during her tenure.
Under Templeton’s leadership, the McWane Science Center underwent numerous changes and expansions. Notably, she was at the helm for the launch of Itty Bitty Magic City, a play area designed for younger children that has been well received by families in the region. Moreover, she successfully navigated the science center through the challenging times of the pandemic, ensuring that the organization remained resilient and adaptable.
Another notable achievement during her time was the renovation and digitization of the IMAX theater. This modernization not only enhanced the visitor experience but also diversified the center’s programming. Templeton also focused on creating early education programs, broadening the center’s appeal and accessibility to a wider audience.
The pandemic posed a significant challenge to Templeton and the McWane Science Center, leading to tough decisions. With the facility forced to shut down, the organization was compelled to reduce its workforce from 130 employees to just 63. Additionally, the center’s budget faced a drastic reduction, from around $8 million to approximately $3 million.
Templeton’s proactive approach was crucial during this time. She applied for Paycheck Protection Program funding as soon as it became available, which would provide vital support for payroll and maintenance of the downtown building. “We applied the day it opened, like at the moment that it opened,” she remarked about the urgency of the application process during the early pandemic days.
As Templeton prepares to step down, she expresses pride in her time at the McWane Science Center. “It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to lead this remarkable organization for the past 12 years,” she stated. Templeton is excited to see what the future holds for the science center and intends to remain a passionate supporter of its mission.
Following her retirement, a national search for her successor will be conducted. The search is being facilitated by ZRG Partners along with a committee from the McWane Science Center’s board of directors. The new CEO will be expected to carry forward the legacy Templeton has built, aiming to enhance the center’s position as one of the nation’s top hands-on STEM education centers.
The organization’s next leader will have the crucial task of continuing to champion an innovative vision that focuses on engaging exhibits, strategic partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to providing hands-on STEM education to all visitors. The goal is to serve not only Birmingham but also patrons from across Alabama and beyond, fostering an environment where curiosity and learning coexist.
As the McWane Science Center looks toward the future, Templeton’s departure marks the end of an era. Her contributions have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the organization and the community it serves. Many in Birmingham will be watching closely to see who will take on the significant responsibility of leading this beloved institution.
