Hey there, Birmingham! Put down your sweet tea and listen up because we’ve got some bittersweet news from our beloved Zydeco, the lively pub and concert hall that’s been a fixture in Five Points South for an impressive 35 years. As of now, the venue has officially closed its doors, but don’t hit the panic button just yet; this is only the beginning of a new chapter!
The owners of Zydeco made the announcement recently, shedding light on the reasons behind this big decision. Arthur Hood, the current owner, explained that rising operating costs and the challenges of maintaining a whopping 115-year-old building took their toll on the music venue. “While we hold our original location in high regard, we are actively seeking a new home to carry on the Zydeco tradition for future generations,” Hood stated. He mentioned that a new location wouldn’t be ready until Spring 2025, which is music to our ears, but hard to wait for!
But don’t worry! Hood and his team are committed to keeping us in the loop through their social media channels, so we can stay excited about what’s coming next. “We recognize the significance of Zydeco as a live music venue in Birmingham,” said Hood, “and we look forward to continuing to support live music for years to come in a modern space.”
In light of the closure, any upcoming shows on Zydeco’s calendar have been canceled or relocated. For example, the much-anticipated concert featuring rappers Erica Banks and Gloss Up on November 3rd has officially been canceled. But, no need to despair! The Braxton Keith and Zach Meadows concert, along with a Diwali afterparty, will now be held at the Workplay Theatre. So mark your calendars and make sure you’re still ready to groove!
The news has left many in the Birmingham community feeling a bit blue. John Parker, who runs the nearby Near To Me Dispensary, shared his fond memories of the venue. “It was nice to set up shop next to a Birmingham institution,” he recalled, reminiscing about seeing guitarist Marcus King perform at Zydeco during his college days. “It will definitely alter the touring and music scene,” he lamented. “The city will be at a net negative from not having Zydeco.” You can really feel the love for this venue, can’t you?
Zydeco’s journey has been rich and vibrant, as it hosted countless iconic acts over the decades. Established in 1989 by Stephen Knight, it has evolved through different ownerships, with Hood being the latest owner after his acquisition last year. Former owner Layne Flournoy emphasized the venue’s invaluable status, saying that its history is unmatched with performances from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers to Grammy winners gracing its stage.
As we bid farewell to this cherished venue, we remember the many patrons who have raised glasses, danced, and enjoyed a night of music within those walls. “We raise our final toast to the immeasurable number of patrons and artists who have passed through our doors,” Hood added beautifully. It’s a sad goodbye, but let’s hold on to the hope of a brighter future for Zydeco in a new location!
As we await the return of Zydeco, let’s keep the memories alive and support our local music scene in any way we can. This may not be the end for this Birmingham institution, but rather a transitional phase. Keep your spirits up, folks; the music is in our hearts, and we know that Zydeco will be back and rocking in no time!
