In the bustling city of Birmingham, parents are finding themselves in a bit of a pickle when it comes to child care options for their little ones. If you’re a parent, you know exactly what we’re talking about! As it turns out, the Alabama Childcare Roadmap, released at the start of 2024, unveiled a staggering 40% gap between the need for child care services and the availability across the state. Luckily for residents, a new startup is stepping up to the plate!
Meet Moxi Childcare, a fresh face in the Birmingham child care scene that’s set to offer some much-needed relief to overwhelmed parents. The company is getting ready to open its first facility right in the heart of downtown Birmingham. What’s unique about Moxi? They’re all about that flexible scheduling! That’s right, no more rigid schedules or having to pay for full-time care when you don’t need it.
According to Fain-Forrest, a representative from Moxi, a lot of families simply don’t require child care five days a week. “They might have a family member available to watch their kids, or they work from home part-time, or even own their own business,” Fain-Forrest explained. “What they really need is dependable child care that fits into their unique lives.”
Say goodbye to frustrating waitlists! Parents using Moxi Childcare will have the freedom to book spots for their kids on a weekly basis. Even better? You can make bookings on the very day you need it, all through their handy booking app. With a smart membership model, parents can secure spots that fit their needs—whether it’s just a few hours a week or several days a month.
“Imagine child care that you can use four times a year, or for four days a week, or even just four hours at a time. We provide that flexibility for parents,” Fain-Forrest said confidently. “By becoming a member of Moxi, parents know their spot is saved for when they need it.”
Child care advocates are hopeful that Moxi’s innovative approach can serve as a model for other options across the state. Holly Glasgow, an expert in child care advocacy, mentions that Alabama lawmakers are also discussing broader solutions to address the child care deficit. Recently, state legislators approved tax breaks for businesses that assist employees with child care costs.
Glasgow emphasizes the importance of local solutions, stating, “We have to look at why we need child care and how we need child care. This really boils down to community issues that can help us tackle the problem in our own backyards before addressing it on a bigger scale.”
Set to open its doors in early 2025 at 2229 1st Avenue N, Moxi Childcare will have the capacity to care for around 60 to 70 children each day. And the excitement doesn’t stop there! Plans are also underway to expand into Homewood, providing even more opportunities for families to access affordable, flexible child care options.
It sounds like Moxi Childcare is just what the doctor ordered for Birmingham parents navigating the sometimes tumultuous waters of child care. With a flexible, technology-driven model and a commitment to meeting families where they are, Moxi aims to make child care not just another checkbox but a seamless part of parenting.
As Birmingham gears up for this new venture, parents can take a breath of fresh air knowing that help is on the horizon, bridging that daunting child care gap and making life just a little easier for all!
