Sponsor Our ArticlesAs Birmingham prepares for its crucial mayoral election on August 26, 2025, State Rep. Juandalynn Givan has declared her candidacy. Her campaign is fueled by the city’s rising crime rates, including a significant increase in homicides. Givan aims to tackle public safety through community policing and police reforms, indicating urgent changes for a city grappling with urban decay and a lack of trust in leadership. The upcoming months will determine the future direction for Birmingham amid growing public concern over safety.
In what some are calling a pivotal moment for Birmingham, State Rep. Juandalynn Givan has officially thrown her hat in the ring for the mayoral election set for August 26, 2025. The announcement came on the very first day of 2024, capturing immediate attention at Birmingham City Hall. As crime continues to escalate in the city—especially violent crime—Givan appears poised to address these pressing issues head-on.
Birmingham residents have recently been engulfed by a wave of concern as the city recorded its highest number of homicides in over nine decades. With a staggering 159 homicides reported in 2024 alone, this alarming statistic represents an increase from just 53 in 2014. For many, the sense of safety has long been overshadowed by fears of crime lurking around every corner.
Rep. Givan is launching her campaign based on three clear principles: people, protection, and progress. In her vision, Givan sees a Birmingham that actively prioritizes community safety and involvement. She is an advocate for bringing back community policing and re-establishing essential law enforcement units such as SWAT and Tactical teams. Givan’s dedication to these principles indicates her commitment to tackling the crime crisis head-on.
Many Birmingham residents may be surprised to learn that there is a significant shortage of police officers, leading to an overload of work for those on the force. A recent report from the Birmingham Crime Commission illuminated the pressures facing the homicide unit, which has seen delays in response times due to insufficient personnel. Alarmingly, about 21% of police officers leave the force within their first two to three years of service, highlighting a concerning trend within the department.
Givan emphasizes that addressing this manpower shortfall is crucial to restoring law and order. With half of the officers leaving the force being under 40 years old, Birmingham must find solutions to retain the talent we have. If elected, Givan plans to implement reforms that will not only support the existing officers but also encourage more individuals to consider joining the police force.
Beyond tackling crime, Givan has her sights set on revitalizing Birmingham. She aims to address the city’s growing problem of urban decay, litter, and the deterioration of homes. The city’s recent struggles have contributed to a perception of Birmingham as a “Tale of Two Cities”, where visible prosperity stands in stark contrast to rampant poverty. Givan’s vision for change includes immediate actions to beautify neighborhoods, promising progress within just 122 days of her potential election.
As Birmingham moves forward, questions linger about the current mayor’s intentions. Mayor Randall Woodfin has yet to announce whether he will make a bid for a third term amidst the looming election. However, with multiple candidates expected to enter the race, including Givan, the spotlight is surely on the upcoming months as residents and leaders rally together to shape Birmingham’s future.
It seems that change is on the horizon as Birmingham prepares for this critical mayoral election, and Juandalynn Givan is certainly stirring the pot. With a passionate message and clear plans, she hopes to propel Birmingham towards a brighter, safer future.
