Birmingham Mayor Asserts ‘It Is Time to Stand by President Biden’ After Call With the President
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Mayor Randall Woodfin of Birmingham has declared his unwavering support for President Joe Biden after participating in a significant conference call with the president and over 200 other Democratic mayors earlier this week.
Mayor Woodfin backs Biden’s Leadership
Displaying a sense of unity for the Democratic party, Mayor Woodfin publicly affirmed his endorsement for Biden and the president’s agenda. This show of steadfast support comes in the wake of a controversial debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump last month, which had left some members of the party wavering.
In his statement, Mayor Woodfin expressed his confidence in Biden’s leadership and commitment, saying, “I participated in the president’s call this week with mayors, where he remained steadfast in his commitment to lead our nation for the next four years.”
Public Support over Politico and Mega Donors
Despite calls from a section of congressional Democrats for President Biden to drop his candidacy following his performance at the debate, Woodfin stressed on the significance of public support. He said, “The people elected President Biden as our nominee, not politicos and mega donors. It is time to stand by him and support his commitment to expanding our middle class, making healthcare more accessible and affordable, and revitalizing our cities.”
Promises for Working Families
The 40-minute call saw President Biden outlining his plans if he were to be elected for a second term. The President emphasised a focus on reducing costs for working families, reducing prescription drug prices, making community college education free, and implementing universal background checks for gun purchases, in addition to implementing an assault rifle ban. These plans form a significant part of Biden’s promise towards making essential services and needs more affordable and accessible to all Americans.
Benefitting Birmingham and Other Cities
Mayor Woodfin noted, with evident satisfaction, the beneficial impact of the Biden-Harris administration’s initiatives on Birmingham through grants such as CHOICE Neighborhoods and Reconnecting Communities. He reinforced his support for the administration to continue their labour in a second term, stating, “I support him to finish the job in a second term.”
