Birmingham, AL—The aftermath of a tragic mass shooting that occurred over the weekend has left the city reeling. On Saturday night, four individuals lost their lives, and at least 17 others were injured when gunfire erupted at a gathering. The incident has sparked a wave of reactions from community leaders and politicians, who are now urging for stricter gun legislation, particularly concerning devices known as Glock switches.

Glock switches, or trigger activators, are attachments that modify semi-automatic handguns, allowing them to fire at the rate of an automatic weapon. The shooting incident has renewed discussions about their legality in Alabama. State Representative Phillip Ensler, representing Montgomery, emphasized the importance of regulating these devices in light of the tragic event. “While some people who plan to carry out shootings will do so regardless, requiring a permit to carry would ‘deter and stop some people from getting their hands on guns’,” said Ensler. He strongly believes that “if we can save some lives, then it’s absolutely worth it.”

During the last legislative session, Ensler introduced a bill aimed at banning Glock switches. The bill successfully passed in the House but unfortunately did not make it to the Senate before the session wrapped up. In response to the urgency of the situation, he has pre-filed the legislation again, known as House Bill 26, for next year’s session. “This is not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue but a human issue,” he asserted.

Concerns from City Officials

As the city grapples with the impact of the deadly shooting, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin declared that Glock switches represent “the number one public safety issue” for both Birmingham and Alabama at large. Woodfin argues that a statewide ban is imperative, stating, “Every mayor, police chief, sheriff and district attorney I know wants Glock switches outlawed.” He has proposed that the law impose significant penalties for crimes committed with altered firearms, including a mandatory 25-year sentence for victims who survive and life without parole for those who do not.

Additionally, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed voiced his agreement with Woodfin, expressing condolences to the victims and their families. Reed also took action on a local level by signing an ordinance requiring individuals carrying concealed weapons to present photo identification. This new rule, effective as of last Friday, states that those without valid ID must surrender their firearms to police, which can be retrieved later upon providing proof of ownership and identification along with a fine.

A Call to Action from State and Federal Leaders

Women’s rights advocate and U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, representing Selma, also weighed in on the situation, urging for immediate measures to address the rampant gun violence in the community. “We as elected officials must do all that we can to break the cycle of violence, get dangerous weapons off our streets, and make our communities safer,” Sewell said. She stated that she and her staff are “closely following the situation” and are prepared to assist the city as needed.
