Birmingham Man Receives Ten-Year Sentence for Gun and Drug Offenses

Birmingham Man Sentenced on Gun and Drug Charges

Birmingham, Ala. — A local man is facing significant prison time following his conviction on gun and drug-related offenses. Damion Deonte Wade, a 24-year-old Birmingham resident, was sentenced to ten years in federal prison after he pled guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with the intent to distribute fentanyl.

The announcement of Wade’s sentencing was made this past Wednesday by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Special Agent in Charge Marcus Watson.

Details of the Charges

The charges stem from an incident that took place on April 11, 2023. According to the plea agreement, Birmingham Police officers stopped Wade’s vehicle due to a tinted windshield, which raised their suspicions. Upon initiating the stop, officers noticed illegal items in plain view within the vehicle, prompting a thorough search.

During the search, authorities recovered a disturbing array of items. They found two digital scales, which are often associated with drug distribution, alongside methamphetamine and fentanyl. Additionally, two firearms were seized — a Mak-47 and a Glock 10mm extended magazine, along with an AK-47 magazine.

Background on the Conviction

Wade’s conviction comes following a previous criminal history, which led to the charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Federal law prohibits individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition, placing significant emphasis on the seriousness of his offenses.

The possession and attempted distribution of fentanyl and methamphetamine also highlight ongoing problems with drug-related activities in the Birmingham area. Fentanyl, in particular, has become a pressing concern due to its potency and the increasing rate of overdose deaths associated with its use.

Community Impact

This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing issues related to drug abuse and violence that many communities, including Birmingham, face. Law enforcement agencies are continuously working to combat these problems and ensure community safety.

The ten-year sentence for Wade not only aims to hold him accountable for his actions but also sends a clear message about the legal repercussions of engaging in such illegal activities. The authorities involved in this case expressed their commitment to maintaining public safety and addressing the challenges posed by gun violence and drug distribution.

As the community continues to address these critical issues, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged with local initiatives aimed at promoting safety and well-being.

What’s Next for Wade

Following the sentencing, Wade will serve his time in a federal facility, where he will remain until the completion of his sentence. His case is one of many in the efforts to tackle the pressing issues of drug and gun crimes in our city.

Birmingham residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement, ensuring that the community plays its part in promoting a safer environment for all.
