Birmingham Man Grateful After Close Call in Alleged Road Rage Incident

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A recent highway encounter turned alarming for a Nashville man who experienced a potential road rage incident while driving on I-65 in Birmingham.

Jim Biddle, a retired police officer, was on his way to visit his son when he found himself in a frightening situation as a semi-truck began driving erratically behind him. According to Biddle, the truck ultimately collided with his vehicle, nearly pushing him into the concrete barrier along the highway.

Close Call

“It nearly put me into the concrete barrier,” Biddle recounted. “I know what happens when a car gets pushed into a concrete barrier. They don’t stay against the barrier. They come out. The truck would have had no way of stopping, and with my car being so small, there would have been a major accident.”

Fortunately, Biddle managed to walk away from the crash unharmed. He promptly called 911 to report the incident and filed a police report. Observing the event unfold, Biddle recorded the unusual behavior of the semi-truck on his camera, a decision he now considers vital as he navigates the aftermath of the incident.

Legal Perspective

Attorney Darius Crayton of Farris, Riley & Pitt Injury Attorneys commented on the importance of documenting such occurrences. “You want them to actually document this and make this a report that this actually happened to you,” Crayton advised, emphasizing that video evidence can play a crucial role in seeking justice.

In Alabama, incidents like the one Biddle experienced are classified as a Class A misdemeanor. “The reason being in that type of crime, that type of incident, you have to prove intent, and it’s hard to prove that person did this intentionally,” noted Crayton. However, video evidence can often bolster a case significantly.

Advice for Drivers

As road rage can lead to dangerous confrontations, law enforcement representatives suggest several strategies for handling these high-pressure situations. Officers recommend focusing on de-escalation and avoiding engagement with aggressive drivers. If a driver suspects they are being followed, they should drive to a police station, fire station, or any populated area for safety.

Biddle’s experience serves as a reminder for all drivers to stay alert on the roads and maintain composure in tense situations. With the increase in erratic driving behaviors, it’s essential to know how to respond effectively and stay safe on the highway.

Conclusion

As Birmingham residents continue to navigate their daily commutes, stories like Biddle’s highlight the unpredictable nature of road travel. Ensuring safety, both personally and for others on the road, is crucial, reminding drivers to prioritize caution and remain calm when faced with potential road rage scenarios.
