Birmingham is buzzing as the countdown begins for the much-anticipated Season 5 of Magic City Fashion Week (MCFW). With the event set to kick off in October, the MCFW team is hard at work preparing to bring together the community and showcase the vibrant fashion scene.
Founded with the mission to cultivate, connect, and showcase Birmingham’s creative community through fashion, MCFW is committed to providing economic opportunities for emerging designers. The event promotes engagement with community partners, and fosters creativity as a means of driving positive change.
This year, one of the highlights will be the Emerging Designers Competition fashion show, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, at The Gallery located in the Pizitz Building at 120 19th St. N. The competition allows up-and-coming designers to showcase their collections before a panel of judges who will select a winner. This winner typically receives a prize and invaluable mentorship to help launch their designs into the broader Birmingham market.
“All of this month’s events are to build community and build our team, find our people, and get ready to highlight fashion,” said MCFW President and CEO, Daniel Grier. This sentiment underscores the intent behind this season’s activities—bringing people together and rallying the fashion community around their shared passion.
In addition to the fashion show, there will be an interest meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, at the Magic City Acceptance Center (3130 Third Ave. S). This meeting is designed for those wanting to engage with MCFW outside of modeling. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and explore where they can make their mark within Birmingham’s fashion community.
Another exciting opportunity is planned for Sunday, September 22, with the Fashion Night Out event at The Palmer Parkside Rooftop Pool and Lounge (1415 Third Avenue South) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event will let models, volunteers, emerging designers, and fashion enthusiasts mix and mingle, while providing a sneak peek at designs from the emerging designers competition. Organizers suggest that attendees add a touch of money green to their outfits as a nod to success and style.
“We’re going to officially announce the designers in person,” Grier explained. “We’ll announce the models that will be in the next season and more of our schedule. We’re focused on building community and getting people together to have a good time.” This gathering is meant to cultivate excitement for the upcoming shows, giving all participants a chance to connect and celebrate the artistry of fashion.
For those interested in taking part in the festivities, pre-registration for the Emerging Designers Competition is encouraged—designers are advised to wear all black. MCFW highly encourages anyone interested in modeling or volunteering to attend the interest meeting and immerse themselves into the Birmingham fashion scene.
