BIRMINGHAM, AL – On Friday, October 11, 2024, U.S. Representative Terri Sewell announced that the Loveman Village housing community in Birmingham will receive $1 million in federal funding to renovate and expand its daycare center. This initiative is part of a larger effort by Sewell to improve community resources throughout Alabama’s 7th Congressional District.
Speaking at the Loveman Village housing complex, Sewell expressed her commitment to ensuring that children and families in the area have access to quality childcare services. She remarked, “No child should go without the resources and support they need to reach their God-given potential, and no parent should go without access to high-quality, affordable childcare.”
The funding comes as part of a broader $13.1 million grant from the 2024 federal budget, allocated for multiple projects across the state. This includes various improvements in cities such as Birmingham and Selma. The daycare center at Loveman Village, which has been described as dilapidated, is a crucial space for families in the community. Dontrelle Young Foster, President and CEO of the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District, noted, “Early childhood education is a vital part of the foundation for success and these funds will truly make an impact for generations to come.”
The funds are designed to renovate existing facilities and expand services to accommodate more children, ensuring that they receive the early education needed for future success.
This announcement follows Sewell’s recent distribution of checks for other projects within her district. Earlier, in her hometown of Selma, she presented a check for $1,666,279 intended to revitalize infrastructure, including road and sidewalk repairs in the downtown area. Additionally, she announced $600,000 for rural health services focusing on expanding mental health and substance abuse services at local clinics, both in Birmingham and Selma.
Sewell emphasized the importance of accessible healthcare, saying, “In this great nation of so much wealth and abundance, no American should go without access to healthcare.” These grants aim to address pressing needs within the community, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Looking ahead, Sewell plans further actions to support infrastructure and health services. On Tuesday, she will distribute another $1 million in Homewood for stormwater management improvements. She remains optimistic about how these grants will transform the communities she serves.
“It’s transformational for a lot of the communities that receive this funding,” Sewell stated, highlighting the need for continued federal support. She also expressed her support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, linking it to future funding opportunities for Alabama’s communities.
“One of the things I’m very proud of in supporting Vice President Harris is she’s made a commitment to build 33 million affordable quality housing units over her term. That’s what we need; we need a commitment.”
As these projects come to fruition, residents of Birmingham and surrounding communities can expect significant improvements in daycare resources, healthcare access, and overall quality of life. With the substantial funding now allocated, local leaders and community members hope to see positive changes that will benefit families for years to come. The Loveman Village daycare renovation is just one step toward that goal, with each initiative building on the last.
