BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A boon to bibliophiles and learners alike, the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) has recently announced its plans to host an impressive array of 256 Summer Reading Programs. Open to all age groups and intended to foster community, education, and entertainment, registration for these programs is planned to be available at every one of the 16 BPL locations.
With such an extensive range of programs on its vibrant calendar, BPL is packed with engaging opportunities for enthusiasts. Here are few samples of what residents can expect this summer.
This exciting program is for 3rd-5th grade students and will be held at the Central Library from June 11 to July 10. The Summer Steamer Camp provides an enriching daily routine that lasts from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Best of all, no child goes hungry as lunch is provided daily. However, spaces are limited, so early registration is recommended. Access to the event is free.
Also on the summer schedule is an event by the Hoop Lady, an innovative exercise approach revolving around the classic hula hoop. This program offers a fun-filled exploration of the hoop’s history while promoting physical wellbeing through creative movement.
A chance for ballet enthusiasts to grasp and appreciate the intricacies of a dancer’s life. Over several dates in June, various branches of the Birmingham libraries will play host to performances from the admirable Alabama Ballet Company dancers.
Internationally recognized drumming facilitator, John Scalici, founder of Get Rhythm, hosts a drum circle. This program is designed to be inclusive and community-building, with no former musical experience necessary to participate.
Jan The Science Lady offers exciting adventures in science filled with explosive and effervescent experiments. A great way to marry fun with learning, this program promises to be a hit with science enthusiasts of all ages.
Birmingham libraries will host the McWane Science Center Demonstration from June 5 through July 24th, giving attendees a chance to experience the thrill of scientific discovery up close.
