Birmingham’s Beloved Indie Filmmaker Tyesha Brown Passes Away

The vibrant city of Birmingham is mourning the loss of Tyesha Brown, a passionate indie filmmaker who left an indelible mark on the local arts community. Tyesha, who was only 42, passed away on Friday in Dayton, Ohio. Known for her heartwarming storytelling and an unwavering commitment to uplifting local talent, her legacy is woven into the very fabric of the Birmingham arts scene.

A Life Filled with Love and Creativity

Tyesha was not just an accomplished filmmaker; she was a beacon of light in her community. Her sister, Daphne Brown, shared a touching tribute in honor of her beloved sibling, stating, “I want people to know that she had an impact on the world around her.” Daphne emphasized how Tyesha’s influence reached far and wide, touching lives not only in Birmingham but also in Los Angeles, Memphis, and Baltimore.

Describing her sister as the “epitome of love,” Daphne said, “When you read your Bible and it says, ‘love is patient, love is kind’, that’s my sister.” Tyesha’s warmth, generous spirit, and infectious smile captivated everyone she met. “I don’t know how I’m gonna do this [life] without her,” Daphne lamented, shedding light on the deep bond they shared. They were inseparable, two best friends navigating life together, and that bond was something truly special.

A Legacy of Unconditional Love

Tyesha’s grandmother, Lois Banks, also shared her thoughts, reflecting on her granddaughter’s profound love for those around her. Lois said, “She was more a giver than she was a receiver.” This heartwarming sentiment echoes many who knew Tyesha well. Her unconditional love and selflessness are traits that will always be remembered by everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

The Path to Filmmaking

Born and raised in the Ensley community, Tyesha graduated from Ensley High School before taking her talents to Morgan State University, where she earned a dual bachelor’s degree in journalism and film studies in 2005. It was during her high school years, as part of a project through Girls Inc.’s Snapshots pregnancy prevention program, that Tyesha discovered her passion for filmmaking, ultimately leading her to create her award-winning debut film, Destani’s Eyes.

Tyesha went on to build an impressive resume, lending her talents to giants like NBC’s The Voice and CBS’s Big Brother among others. Balancing her time between Hollywood and her hometown, she brought a unique blend of expertise and love for Birmingham into her productions.

Making an Impact through IAMCLASSYBROWN Productions

In 2023, she took another significant step by founding IAMCLASSYBROWN Productions. This venture allowed her to focus on telling urban stories, comedies, and biopics while simultaneously shining a spotlight on emerging talent in Birmingham and Detroit. Her latest project, Checkmate, united experienced actors alongside fresh faces, exemplifying her commitment to boosting local creativity.

Aside from her film projects, Tyesha’s dedication to mentoring the next generation was evident in her work with organizations like Flourish, Encore Theatre and Gallery, and Make It Happen Theater Company. Her encouragement inspired many aspiring filmmakers to believe that they, too, could make their dreams a reality.

An Enduring Legacy

Tyesha’s unique spirit, relentless drive to create meaningful art, and deep love for her hometown have solidified her place in the hearts of those she touched. In the wake of her passing, her family has requested support for her funeral expenses through donations, acknowledging the need for community support in laying their beloved Tyesha to rest.
