Birmingham Gears Up for Independence Day as UAB Summer Band Plans Free Outdoor Concert
Patrons are in for a delightful celebration of Independence Day as the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Summer Band bestows a musical appeal for the evening to remember for a lifetime. A free concert is planned to be held outside Barton Arena on July 4, beginning at 7 p.m.
Patriotic Tunes and Movie Sound Tracks to Set the Mood
The venerable UAB Summer Band will showcase a repertoire of patriotic songs and movie soundtrack tunes featuring works by renowned composers such as Henry Fillmore, John Williams, and John Philip Sousa. The attendees can bring along their folding chairs, blankets, and picnics to relish a comfortable setting reminiscing the essence of an open-air concert.
In a sweepstakes surprise, audience members stand a chance to conduct the band playing the iconic “Stars and Stripes Forever” for the grand finale. After the musical fete, concert-goers can extend their enjoyment by staying on to spectate a breathtaking fireworks show launched from Red Mountain at 9 p.m.
Presentation by UAB Department of Music
This annual spectacle is presented by the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music. The UAB Summer Band comprises approximately 70 individuals – a vibrant blend of UAB faculty members, students, alumni, along with professional and amateur musicians from the community. Remarkably, some members have been playing with the group for over two decades. The band convenes for rehearsals weekly during June.
The upcoming concert will see UAB Director of Bands, Sean Murray, Ph.D., serve as the conductor, alongside Assistant Director of Bands, Cara Morantz, Ed.D. The concert also plans to feature UAB students and local middle and high school band directors roped in as guest conductors.
