Birmingham’s Community Shaken by Homicide on Pearson Avenue
On the evening of October 30, 2024, Birmingham was struck by another tragic incident when a shooting left one man dead and another injured in the 1700 block of Pearson Avenue Southwest. The victim has been identified as Melvin Anthony Burkes, a 38-year-old Birmingham resident.
The Birmingham Police Department received a call shortly after 6 p.m. regarding a person who had been shot. Upon their arrival, officers found one individual with a non-life-threatening injury. However, they quickly discovered Burkes lying on the sidewalk with severe gunshot wounds.
According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, bystanders were quick to provide aid to Burkes before police took over with life-saving measures. Both victims were subsequently transported to UAB Hospital by the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Unfortunately, Burkes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, as the shooter fled the scene. Officer Fitzgerald mentioned that one person was detained for questioning shortly after the incident but was released upon further investigation when it was determined that this individual was not the suspect.
This incident marks a grim milestone for Birmingham, as it is the 134th homicide in the city this year. Out of these cases, 10 have been ruled justifiable, and a couple of other cases from previous years resulted in fatalities this year. Overall, 169 homicides have occurred in Jefferson County in 2024, including those in Birmingham.
