Birmingham, Ala. – A homicide investigation is underway following a shooting that occurred on Sunday evening in the 700 block of 81st Place South. The Birmingham Police Department (BPD) reported a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire in the area just before 9:20 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two victims: a man and a woman, both unresponsive.
The male victim was found lying in the roadway, while the female victim was found in the front yard of a nearby residence. Both individuals appeared to have suffered from apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency responders from Birmingham Fire and Rescue quickly arrived and transported the victims to UAB Hospital for treatment.
The deceased male has been identified as Jemarcus Desean McIntrye. According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, he was pronounced dead at 9:53 p.m. on the same evening. The female victim, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, is reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries.
During the investigation, BPD received an additional report of another individual who had arrived at St. Vincent’s East Hospital via a private vehicle with gunshot wounds. Officers are currently working to determine if this third victim is connected to the initial shooting incident.
When questioned about the potential links of this incident to a previous mass shooting that occurred in the Five Points South area on Saturday, BPD Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated, “We’re not ruling anything out because one of our personnel received intel that this may be related. Anytime we have a public member willing to step up and give information, we’re going to investigate that the best we can.”
As of now, there are no suspects in custody, and the police are actively seeking public assistance. If anyone has information regarding this case, they are urged to contact the Birmingham Police Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or dial 911.
