Birmingham Community Mourns the Loss of Local Boy Braylen Hardy
Birmingham, AL – The community is reeling from the tragic death of Braylen Hardy, a 13-year-old boy who passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, following a hit-and-run incident that left him critically injured. Braylen had been sitting on his all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on Avenue E in the Ensley neighborhood when he was struck by a vehicle fleeing the scene of a nearby shooting.
According to reports from the Birmingham Police Department, the collision occurred around 6:45 PM on Saturday evening as Braylen was preparing to put away his ATV after a family outing. Witnesses stated that they heard gunshots in the nearby 2400 block of Avenue D just before the crash. A vehicle, described as driving erratically and at a high speed, lost control and jumped the curb, hitting Braylen. The driver fled on foot but was apprehended a few blocks away by patrol officers.
A Family’s Heartbreak
Braylen’s mother, Vanessa Riggs, said her son was a bright and cheerful boy who always brought smiles to those around him. “He was just a sweet kid,” she recalled with tears. “He was always smiling.” Since the incident, Vanessa had been hopeful for a miracle, but after several days in the hospital, they made the difficult decision to let go, as Braylen’s tests showed no brain activity.
“The only thing keeping him was the breathing machine,” Riggs said. “I just decided to let him go, to be an angel.” During his time in the hospital, Braylen suffered from multiple injuries including a broken leg, a broken arm, and damage to his lungs and head. His family had been praying for his recovery, but the heartbreaking decision was made after doctors indicated there was little chance for recovery.
A Dedicated Student and Athlete
In his short life, Braylen made lasting impacts on his peers and community. He was a seventh grader at Bush Hills STEAM Academy and had recently earned a spot on the school basketball team. His mother shared that he was excited for the upcoming season and was looking forward to his first game.
“He loved to play video games and especially enjoyed a good meal,” Riggs reminisced, describing Braylen’s favorite dish of mild wings and cheese fries. School was also a place where he thrived, as his teachers and principal shared warm stories about his popularity among classmates and his positive attitude.
Community Reaction
With Braylen’s passing, the Birmingham community has come together in support of his family. School Superintendent Mark Sullivan expressed his condolences and stated that counseling services are being provided for students and staff affected by this tragic event. The loss of such a young life is felt overwhelmingly throughout the neighborhood.
Braylen leaves behind three brothers and a sister, who are also grappling with the loss of their beloved sibling. His mother emphasized how much Braylen loved spending time with family, stating, “He was just a fun-loving kid.”
As the investigation continues regarding the circumstances surrounding the hit-and-run, the community remains hopeful for justice for Braylen. Many are coming together to honor his memory and celebrate the bright light he brought into their lives.
