In an effort to take a step towards sustainable environmental practices, the City of Birmingham has officially launched phase two of its recycling cart program today, August 9. The city is providing its residents with a total of 5,100 brand new 64-gallon recycling carts for free as part of this initiative. The goal is to reduce the waste sent to landfills, conserve natural resources, and prevent pollution.
There are two ways available for interested residents to register for these free recycling carts. The first option is to attend the City’s Food Truck Friday event in front of City Hall from 11 a.m.-2 p.m on the kick-off date, August 9, and fill out a form in person. Alternatively, residents are also able to register online here at any time.
Upon completion and submission of the form, residents will be redirected to a confirmation page which contains information regarding which items are acceptable for recycling. Upon successful verification of their address and approval of their application, the recycling cart is planned to be delivered to the registered household within two weeks.
It should be noted that these eco-friendly carts are available only while their supplies last. The carts are exclusively for Birmingham residents, with a limit of one recycling cart per household. Businesses and residents of multiple dwelling units, unfortunately, are not eligible for this program. The City of Birmingham has recycling days scheduled for the first and third Wednesday of each month. Pickups may be rescheduled to the following week’s Wednesday if city holidays fall on the usual recycling days.
The first recycling pickup date for these new carts has been set for Wednesday, Sept. 11. Until then, residents are expected to continue using their previous recycling methods. Registration is based on a first-come, first-serve principle, so residents are encouraged to sign up sooner rather than later.
If residents have any queries about the new recycling cart program, they can reach out to the city at recycle@birminghamal.gov. There is also additional information available on the city’s official website at www.birminghamal.gov/recycle where a comprehensive list of items suitable for recycling can be found.
This initiative by the City of Birmingham showcases the importance of green initiatives and encourages residents to partake in environmentally friendly practices. The city has shown immense dedication in promoting a sustainable society, with this free recycling cart program being another step in achieving that goal.
