BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Residents looking to enhance their reading and communication skills have an exciting opportunity right in their community. St. Mark CME Church has partnered with Birmingham Jumpstart to provide free English and Spanish lessons to adults in the area. The classes are held every Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at the church located in Titusville.
The 14-week program kicked off on October 4, aiming to support adults who struggle with reading and communication. There is no registration required for interested participants, making it easily accessible for those in need. Rev. Charles B. Williams, Jr., of St. Mark CME Church, emphasized the importance of these lessons during a recent discussion.
“The big picture is where we can serve and bridge the gap for those persons who do not have adequate reading skills,” Rev. Williams said. “To help them to overcome those obstacles.” His words reflect a broader mission to support community members in improving their literacy, which can have an enormous impact on their daily lives.
In addition to catering to general literacy needs, the program specifically aims to assist Birmingham’s Hispanic population. Rev. Williams stated the importance of making this group feel more integrated within the community. He remarked on the goal of helping individuals “to accumulate [skills] and feel more comfortable within the community.”
These classes serve as an essential resource for anyone in Birmingham looking to boost their literacy skills without the burden of enrollment fees or registration processes. Participants can benefit from both individual instruction and group support, creating a welcoming environment for learning.
If you’re curious to learn more or if you would like to join these classes, you can reach out to Rev. Williams directly at 205-531-3750 or via email at Carloswm@bellsouth.net. He encourages anyone interested to come by and be part of this enriching experience.
This initiative comes at a time when the focus on education is crucial for the community’s growth and development. By providing these lessons, St. Mark CME Church and Birmingham Jumpstart are stepping up to meet the needs of local adults. Learning or improving reading and writing skills can lead to increased job opportunities, better self-confidence, and ultimately, a stronger community overall.
Residents of Birmingham are urged to take advantage of this valuable opportunity. If you know someone who might benefit from these classes, please spread the word. Community involvement and support are vital to ensuring the success of initiatives like this one, which aim to empower individuals through education.
As Birmingham continues to grow and evolve, programs like these represent a commitment to inclusivity and opportunity for all its residents. Whether you’re a native speaker or looking to learn a new language, these classes offer a welcoming space to enhance your skills.
