Birmingham Seeks Federal Grant for Aging Bridges
Birmingham, Ala. – The city of Birmingham is taking significant steps to improve its infrastructure by applying for a $5 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This funding will be crucial for repairing and replacing several aging bridges across the city. If approved, the federal grant will be combined with $1 million in matching funds from the city, bringing the total amount available for bridge work to $6 million.
Focus on Repairs
The city’s application initially targeted 11 bridges; however, due to higher-than-expected project cost estimates, the funds will only support repairs or replacements for five bridges at this time. Among those selected for attention are bridges located at:
- Lawson and Five Mile Creek
- Fifth Avenue North tunnel
- Green Springs Avenue exit at the interstate
- West Boulevard at Village Creek near the public golf course
- Second Avenue North and Sixth Street
According to Christina Argo, Birmingham’s deputy director for strategic projects, the strategy behind choosing these specific bridges involves evaluating their condition and the essentiality of the repairs. “We have a running log of bridge infrastructure and scheduled routine maintenance, which helps us prioritize what work and improvements get done,” Argo explained.
Prioritizing Infrastructure Needs
The city is committed to addressing the remaining six bridges once additional funding can be secured. With limited resources, the decision-making process relies heavily on various factors, including existing structures’ conditions and the urgency of required maintenance.
One prominent example overshadowing the city’s bridge maintenance efforts is the Rainbow Bridge, which has been closed for an extensive period. Argo noted that bringing the Rainbow Bridge up to public safety standards could cost over $40 million.
