It’s been a heartbreaking week in Birmingham, as the community mourns the loss of a cherished grandfather, Fabin Houston “Pops” Boyd, who lost his life in a tragic hit-and-run incident. The 70-year-old was struck by a car while walking home from dinner with friends on the evening of November 14, 2024. Tragically, the driver fled the scene, leaving his family grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
On that fateful Thursday, just before 5:30 p.m., Fabin was making his way home from the Salvation Army, a place he frequented not only for meals but also to connect with friends in the community. According to his sister, Charise Boyd, “He was crossing the street, and a car struck him and kept going.” This sudden collision left Fabin dead at the scene.
Charise had been looking forward to his usual visit that day and couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong when he didn’t show up. “I saw my brother at least every other day, and when I didn’t see him that Thursday, I went to his apartment looking for him,” she recalled. “Nobody had seen him.” It wasn’t until she received the devastating news from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office that she learned of the entire situation. “They took a big piece of me,” Charise expressed, still reeling from the shock.
Fabin Boyd was known for his warm personality and zest for life. “He was always full of laughter and joy,” Charise said, adding, “He never met a stranger.” His family described him as an upbeat individual who always offered a helping hand when needed. He leaves behind three adult children and five grandchildren, all of whom deeply cherished their time with him.
With heavy hearts, his family gathered at the location of the tragedy on Thursday to memorialize him. They shared heartfelt stories, reminiscing about the joyous moments they had with Fabin. “This is a bittersweet day,” Charise reflected as they released blue balloons into the sky in memory of their beloved Pops. “This is one week today that he was killed out here by a person that struck him down and kept going.”
The family is left grappling with the tremendous loss of their loved one, along with the unanswered questions surrounding his death. “They took someone very meaningful to us,” Charise lamented. “He was the best.” As they navigate their grief, the family urges anyone with information about the incident to come forward. “An arrest is my goal,” Charise emphasized, highlighting the need for accountability. “To find out who would take his life like that with no conscience.”
Authorities are actively investigating the case and ask anyone who might have witnessed the incident or has valuable information to get in touch with the Birmingham police or to call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
The loss of Fabin Boyd has sent ripples through the Birmingham community. As friends and family continue to come to terms with his passing, they remember him not just for his outgoing personality but for the love and joy he brought into their lives. Community members are encouraged to honor his memory by participating in safety initiatives and being vigilant while on the roads.
As this family seeks justice for a man who meant so much to them, their resilience and love remind us all of the bonds that hold us together during times of adversity. Fabin Boyd may be gone, but his spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him.
