Birmingham Welcomes Nonprofit Leaders for 2024 Elevate Conference
Birmingham recently became a buzzing hub for more than 250 nonprofit leaders from the great state of Alabama, all gathered to participate in the 2024 Elevate Conference. Organized by the Alabama Power Foundation, this annual event is designed not just to inform but also to inspire, empower, and connect those dedicated to uplifting communities throughout the state. To top it all off, this year marks a very special milestone—the 35th anniversary of the foundation itself!
A Celebration of Purpose and Partnership
As the evening kicked off with a lively dinner at Protective Stadium, attendees were treated to a night filled with cupcakes, confetti cannons, and even a giant birthday card! Staci Brown Brooks, who wears many hats including the president of the Alabama Power Foundation, expressed the heartfelt mission that drives everyone in the room. “We share the incredible gift and the challenge of building up Alabama and her people—that’s the mission that keeps all of us going,” she said, setting the tone for what was to be an inspiring gathering.
Focus Areas that Matter
Since its establishment on October 31, 1989, the Alabama Power Foundation has steadfastly committed to five focus areas: educational advancement, civic and community development, arts and cultural enrichment, environmental stewardship, and health and human services. In her State of the Foundation address, Brooks emphasized the foundation’s consistency over the years. “Our five focus areas really have remained unchanged for the past 35 years,” she noted.
She also shared some jaw-dropping stats—last year alone, the foundation awarded a whopping $15,247,130 through 1,063 grants. It’s no wonder the nonprofit leaders in attendance felt fueled with excitement!
Getting Down to Business
The second day of the conference was packed with informative sessions aimed at empowering these leaders with practical tools. A notable highlight was a panel discussion on strategic fundraising and grant writing featuring distinguished leaders from various organizations. These experts shared their wisdom and ignited new thoughts for many, including Jeff Ware, director of philanthropy for The Nature Conservancy in Alabama. “I always find something useful,” he commented. “They reminded me of some things that maybe had slipped my memory, and their passion for what they were doing inspired me to think in new ways about what I want to do.”
Furthermore, Jake McKenzie, CEO of Intermark Group, provided insights on psychology-based marketing, leaving attendees with food for thought. His perspective on branding struck a chord with Paul Kennedy of the Walker Area Community Foundation, who values continual learning in his field.
Networking and Collaboration: The Heart of Elevate
But this conference wasn’t just about the learning; it was also about making connections. Opportunities to network were aplenty. Catherine Goudreau, executive director of Better Basics, jumped at the chance to explore partnerships with fellow attendees. For many, the event was a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and spark collaborations. Karlos Finley, executive director of the Africatown Redevelopment Corporation, captured the sentiment perfectly: “It’s about all boats being raised by that rising tide.”
Inspiration from the Keynotes
The event wouldn’t have been the same without its inspiring keynote speakers. One graciously took to the stage to share their personal journey—Timothy Alexander, a life coach and motivational speaker, who turned his traumatic past into a powerhouse of inspiration. From being paralyzed in a car accident to achieving greatness, his passion for remaining focused on one’s vision struck a note for many.
Wrapping it up was the legendary Leland Melvin, a former NFL wide receiver turned NASA astronaut. His story of grit and overcoming setbacks left everyone feeling pumped and energized! “It really filled my cup,” shared Jamie Brown, director of development for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, reflecting on the impact of Melvin’s words.
Looking Ahead
Birmingham’s Elevate Conference certainly surpassed expectations, leaving attendees with useful insights, newfound connections, and a sense of renewal. After all, being in a room full of passionate leaders dedicated to creating positive change is nothing short of exhilarating! Wouldn’t you agree? Here’s to many more years of collaboration and impact across Alabama!
