Birmingham’s Economic Development Leader Takes on International Role
Birmingham, Alabama—In a significant achievement for the city, Cornell Wesley, the director of Innovation and Economic Opportunity for Birmingham, has been appointed to the board of directors for the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) for a two-year term. This makes Wesley the first economic development leader from Birmingham to hold this position and only the second person from Alabama to achieve this honor.
The IEDC is a prominent non-profit and non-partisan organization focused on supporting economic developers around the globe, boasting a membership of over 4,500 individuals and organizations, solidifying its role as the largest organization of its kind.

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin expressed his enthusiasm about Wesley’s appointment, stating, “Director Wesley’s leadership has greatly expanded the visibility of the City of Birmingham, which has yielded a tremendous economic impact that will be felt for generations.” Woodfin continued to highlight Wesley’s and his team’s dedication, saying they consistently seek ways to stimulate the local economy, noting their efforts in attracting events from “Paris, France to Pratt City.”
A Proven Track Record
Wesley has played a pivotal role in bringing major events to Birmingham, such as the 2021 World Games, the 2023 National Association of Black Journalists conference, and the upcoming 2025 World Police and Fire Games. His portfolio also includes other significant conventions and meetings, showcasing his capacity to draw attention to Birmingham as a hub for large-scale events.
Wesley’s work extends beyond event management; he has addressed pressing community issues, notably tackling the city’s food deserts. Through innovative initiatives, he facilitated the opening of a grocery store in a building that had been vacant for over a decade, directly impacting local residents’ access to fresh food.
Development Initiatives
Wesley also oversaw the sale and development of the Green Meadow real estate initiative, which is notable for being led by an all African American team. This transaction, which exceeded $2 billion, represents the largest deal conducted by African Americans in Birmingham’s history, marking a substantial achievement for the community.
A Personal Reflection
In response to his new role with the IEDC, Wesley remarked, “This achievement is not only significant for me personally but also a tremendous opportunity for Birmingham and the state of Alabama. It brings with it greater visibility and enhanced access to resources that will aid us in our mission of prioritizing our community.”
Background and Experience
A native of the Titusville neighborhood and a graduate of A.H. Parker High School, Wesley brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Prior to his current role, he served as the Economic Development Representative for Oklahoma and North Texas at the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration. There, he managed over $20 million in federal investments, resulting in a $1.5 billion impact in private investments and the creation of more than 4,000 jobs.
Wesley holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Morehouse College and has earned certifications in management, economic development, and entrepreneurship from several institutions across the country. His accolades include being recognized as part of the “Top 40 Under 40” by reputable publications and serving as a past fellow of the Delta Entrepreneur Network.
