An enlightening short film centered around Birmingham’s significant history during the Civil Rights Movement, called “I’m Still Here,” is set to premiere at a renowned local Film Festival this Monday. The documentary short film showcases the stirring experiences of three individuals who spent their childhood on Center Street, famously known as Dynamite Hill.
Center Street in the Smithfield neighborhood earned the ominous nickname ‘Dynamite Hill’ during the Civil Rights Movement, owing to the frequent bombings targeted at African-American families who courageously moved into the area despite intimidation from segregationists.
The neighborhood soon transformed into a symbol of both violence and valiant resistance. African-American professionals living there constantly wrestled with threats in their struggle against segregation.
The short film seeks to shed light on this important chapter of Birmingham’s history. “I had lived in Birmingham for 40 years, completely unaware of what happened on Center Street. Our time with Barbara, Jefferson, and Judge Brown was both enlightening and uplifting. What happened here was horrible, but as long as we embrace our history by sharing it with others then Birmingham can be a symbol of hope,” disclosed the film producer, Sam Miller.
The short film is set to make its debut at the prestigious local Film Festival on Monday. Filled with moving narratives, historical imagery, and raw storytelling, the documentary captures the essence of a time where societal status quo was challenged, and history was written.
Film enthusiasts who are eager to delve into the history of Birmingham, especially the vibrant Civil Rights Movement, can purchase their tickets for the premiere now. The film is expected to provoke both thought and emotion, taking its viewers on a meaningful journey into Birmingham’s past.
