On the evening of Thursday, November 21, 2024, the Birmingham police responded to a chilling call about shots fired in the 4400 block of 41st Place North. Police Find Two Men Dead

The chaotic scene unfolded at approximately 3:51 p.m. in the 6000 block of Wood Station Drive, further elevating the city’s concerns about rising gun violence.

Birmingham’s Rising Homicide Toll

Unfortunately, Birmingham isn’t new to these headlines. As of now, the city has recorded an alarming 144 homicides this year. Out of these, 10 have been deemed justifiable, leaving us with a staggering number of criminal cases this year alone. In comparison, 2023 ended with 135 homicides, and 2022 even saw 144, marking that year as the deadliest in recent history.

Just to put things into perspective, prior to 2022, the highest number of homicides recorded in modern times was 141 in 1991. Even more historically, Birmingham set its all-time record for homicides in 1933, when 148 lives were taken.
