Birmingham’s Dining Scene Evolves with New Additions Amid Recent Closures

Birmingham’s Dining Scene Adjusts with Recent Closures and Openings

Birmingham, a city known for its vibrant dining scene, recently witnessed the closure of Saltgrass Steak House near Perimeter Park along U.S. Highway 280. After a six-year run that began in the fall of 2018, the Texas-based steakhouse has shut its doors, leaving local patrons disappointed.

Saltgrass Steak House was established in Houston in 1991 and became known for its varied menu featuring steak, pork, shrimp, fish, ribs, and salads. The Birmingham location opened in the former space of Tilted Kilt, which closed in May 2017. Following its closure, the building underwent extensive renovations throughout the spring and summer, ultimately leading to the arrival of Saltgrass.

With Saltgrass no longer in operation, the Birmingham metro area is left with just one remaining location on John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover, which also opened in 2018. The shutdown reflects a changing landscape for local dining options. Requests for comments from the parent company, Landry’s, were not returned, nor is the U.S. 280 location currently listed on the company’s website.

New Additions to the Birmingham Dining Scene

While the closure of Saltgrass Steak House marks the end of a chapter, Birmingham continues to welcome new establishments to its local gastronomy. One of the most anticipated openings is Armour House, set to debut on November 8. This exciting venture is the brainchild of not only Partner and Executive Chef Jeffrey Compton but also local entrepreneurs Rollins Montgomery and Chris Reebals.

Located at 2309 First Ave. N. in the recently renovated Armour & Co. Building, Armour House aims to emphasize fresh, locally sourced ingredients. This new restaurant is poised to enhance the dining landscape in Birmingham with its focus on quality and sustainability.

In addition to Armour House, the city recently welcomed Outback Steakhouse to downtown Birmingham earlier this year. Situated across from Publix at 245 20th St. S., this location offers a redesigned restaurant model featuring a larger footprint and a modern Aussie atmosphere. Outback Steakhouse joins other dining options at 20 Midtown, such as Milo’s, Panda Express, and Cava.

The Future of Dining in Birmingham

The Birmingham dining scene continues to evolve, balancing closures and new openings with potential for growth. As taste preferences shift and new culinary trends emerge, local diners can look forward to exciting options that reflect both local flavors and broader culinary influences.

While the closure of Saltgrass Steak House marks a significant change for regular patrons, the arrival of new establishments like Armour House and the revitalization of existing venues like Outback Steakhouse offer a glimpse into a vibrant future for Birmingham’s culinary landscape. As the city embraces its newest dining adventures, the hopes are high that they will be well received by both long-time residents and newcomers alike.

Birmingham’s reputation as a dining destination remains intact, and with each new opening, the community continues to showcase its diversity and passion for food. Only time will tell how these changes will impact the local scene, but for now, residents remain optimistic about the future of dining in Birmingham.
