Healthy Living Awareness Event
Last week, nearly 100 community members came together at CityWalk in Birmingham to shine a light on the critical issues of type 2 diabetes and obesity. The event was a collaborative effort between local organizations, including Virta Health, Alabama Goodwill, and the Birmingham District 5 City Council, with special guest and former NFL player, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.
Participants spent a lively afternoon engaging in various activities aimed at increasing awareness and promoting healthy living. One of the highlights was a clothing drive organized by Alabama Goodwill, encouraging attendees to donate gently used clothing to support community initiatives.
The event featured a fun and educational game known as the “Nutrition Knockout” wheel of fortune, where attendees could learn about nutrition in an interactive way. Live music and delicious food added to the festive atmosphere, ensuring that the event was both enjoyable and informative.
The program included a series of guest speakers who shared personal stories and insights on the importance of supporting healthy communities. Clinton-Dix, who shared his journey, spoke candidly about the impact of diabetes in his own family. He expressed his admiration for his grandfather, who struggled with the disease but played a significant role in his life. “It was tough to watch him go through it every day,” Clinton-Dix said, reflecting on his grandfather’s battles.
“I think about all the great things I’ve done and accomplished in my life,” he continued. “But the one thing I can’t buy is time. Health and wealth is important for your time. If you can’t take care of yourself, you’re not going to live for a long time.” His words resonated with many in attendance, underscoring the event’s message of prioritizing health.
Kevin Kumler, the president of Virta Health, spoke passionately about the organization’s mission to reverse type 2 diabetes and obesity. “We aim to help one billion people,” he shared. His organization has already helped individuals in Birmingham lose over 40,000 pounds, demonstrating the community’s potential for change.
“Birmingham is an incredibly resilient city,” Kumler noted. “We have the resources and the grit to fight back against diabetes and obesity.” His enthusiasm was matched by attendees, many of whom expressed hope and determination to embrace healthier lifestyles.
City Councilor Darrell O’Quinn also took the stage to highlight the city’s commitment to creating an environment that fosters health and wellness. “We’re trying to build out our infrastructure,” he explained, “to give residents the opportunity to exercise easily and connect with their community.” O’Quinn emphasized the importance of partnerships with organizations like Virta Health in achieving these goals.
As the day wrapped up, the message was clear: with collective effort and dedication, Birmingham has the potential to make significant strides in combating type 2 diabetes and obesity. The event served as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of health, as residents left feeling motivated and empowered to take action.
