BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The spirit of community was palpable at the recent Bocce Bash fundraiser organized by the Birmingham Crisis Center’s Junior Board. Held at the local community center, the event aimed to raise funds for the Michael K. Falligant Scholarship while gathering residents to support mental health initiatives in the region.
The Junior Board, made up of local members and dedicated volunteers, has been pivotal in driving efforts to meet the needs of individuals facing personal crises or mental health challenges, as emphasized by Baylee Clark, the president of the Junior Board. “A big part of our job is volunteer appreciation,” Clark stated, explaining that the group strives to support and thank the volunteers who play such an important role at the Crisis Center.
The Bocce Bash was a lively event, but it wasn’t the only way the Junior Board is nurturing the community. Clark also highlighted the positive influence of the Santa for Seniors initiative, where the Junior Board delivers Christmas gifts to seniors who may not receive gifts during the holiday season. “That’s a very rewarding experience for everyone involved,” she noted.
Nicholas Brown, Vice President of the Junior Board, joined the group in August 2023 and shared his perspective on the importance of the Crisis Center for Birmingham and the surrounding areas. “I think the Crisis Center is critical. They provide services for folks that might have mental health issues, or any issues regarding abuse,” Brown expressed. He highlighted that many individuals lack access to resources, making the Crisis Center’s role even more vital.
The Birmingham Crisis Center hosts an array of resources designed to assist the community. Their services include a crisis hotline, rape response teams, and specialized talk lines for both youth and seniors. “It serves people from all walks of life, from all stages of life,” Clark added, reinforcing the unique aspect of the Crisis Center that sometimes goes unnoticed.
As part of their ongoing efforts, the Junior Board is looking to expand its membership to better reflect the diversity of Birmingham. “It’s important that we have new Junior Board members who are eager to help,” Clark stated. She mentioned that having representatives from various backgrounds brings in different perspectives and enhances their capability to support the community effectively.
The Crisis Center’s mission goes beyond just providing immediate assistance; it seeks to foster awareness of mental health issues, aiming to create an open dialogue around problems that can often go unspoken. “This is something that doesn’t get as much attention as other issues, and it’s something that can be harder to talk about than other things, which is exactly why we need to pay attention to it,” Clark indicated.
With the Junior Board’s dedication to volunteer appreciation and community involvement, the success of events like the Bocce Bash is crucial for sustaining their programs. Volunteers not only share their time but also help spread the message surrounding vital mental health resources and community support.
The Crisis Center continues to welcome donations and offers of assistance from the community. Whether through volunteering, participating in events, or contributing financially, every little bit helps in making a significant impact. “We want people to know that we’re here, and there’s always a way to get involved,” concluded Brown.
As Birmingham continues to address the challenges of mental health awareness, initiatives led by the Junior Board ensure that the community remains interconnected and supportive for those in need. For anyone interested in joining the Junior Board or learning more about the Crisis Center’s offerings, they encourage residents to reach out and engage with the initiatives making a difference.
